I am wondering why a shock intended for the non-Touring model, combined with other Touring parts, would cause spring noises. Is it possible that the top mount of a shock is worn?

the bottom of the touring spring has a larger diameter by just enough that the strut bottom plate dimple rides up on the spring

I would not order any Monroe struts again, just ordered Toyota struts. after installing the Monroe struts front and rear and looking at the mounting bracket quality I would say the Toyota brackets are higher in quality. Summit Racing has been nothing less than the best people to deal with, they are taking the rear struts back. I only wish that I could get the right parts from them but like I said Monroe does not make touring struts nor does KYB.

OEMToyotaScionParts.com just ordered the struts from these guys, also ordered front and rear touring strut bars and bushings for my other Prius. It is worth the effort for these. I also ordered bolt 90119-14125 for all 4 of my Prius as they sit in a pocket of salty water and corrode bad. I used Molycoat on reinstall to avoid this from happening again. OEMToyotaScionParts.com ships free for orders over $300 dollars and that's a good deal!

Yeah I get it the lower spring perch is not nestling the spring right. The end of the spring should nestle right up to the stop edge on the perch. If ill fitted it will make a bang or weird loud noises under load. You should have noticed this
upon install that it was not fitting right.

I have used Monroe struts and shocks before and they start out good but go to hell really fast. Monroe basically sucks
but sometimes only available strut unless you go OEM and some OEM's are really expensive.

Got the Toyota struts and put them on today wow what a different's no noises smooth and tight. The perch on the Toyota touring strut is almost square and measures 1/4 inch bigger but the spring fits perfect. I took some shots of the differences.

Thanx for the Info ya'all, these arthritic hands have spent many an hour getting busted up on others vehicles, now I just build trailers and hitches. I believe that I will pay someone to fix it.

I have a "Touring" model as I think it's the only model we got here with the 16" wheels and I've fitted 205/55/16 LRR tyres and it's not uncomfortable at all. It's hard when I have the tyres up to 44 or so, but dropping to 40ish and it's grand. I'd like to stiffen up the car a bit as it rolls alot in the corners, but to solve that I'd have to change the shocks and springs (h&r probably), but I don't think it's really worth the hassle

Tony, there are three Prius models available being the:- T3, T4, and Tspirit. All come with 16 inch wheels, but I believe it is only the Tspirit that is the equivalent of the touring. Perhaps you could confirm this if you have a T3 or T4 by looking at the rear shocks and reporting what color the two rings are near the bottom of the shocks.

Ah, interesting. I have the 16s alright. Mines a T4. I assumed that they would have had the same suspension setup.

I'll have a look tonight and report back

How many miles did the original OEM struts last?

Replace the whole strut and you don't have to worry about the compression thing, and oddly enough, I found the price difference wasn't all that much.

That being said, I've changed coil springs without using a compressor, by using a jack and the weight of the car itself to do the actual release and recompressing.

It worked on all my toyotas and my saturn.

    Use your own judgement.
