I tried to go get the inspection sticker done on my "new" Prius not realizing that having a different traction battery installed in it everyday would cause a problem. I knew that a new 12v has to be driven on for a short period of time before an inspection can be done, but the mechanic said I had to drive 150 miles! Do you think he was over exaggerating or is this legit?

Yes. Removing the 12 volt battery cleared all the codes in the computers. Once you drive about 150 miles any defects in the system will have set the failure codes for that defect.

If you were allowed to take the test right after unhooking the battery, some folks would just unhook the battery rather than fix their car, which defeats the entire purpose of the test.

It is true that after the 12V battery is reconnected, the car has to be driven at a variety of speeds for a while so that the engine ECU can see whether any DTC will be logged. I'm not sure that "a while" requires 150 miles of travel; that probably depends upon the specific vehicle model.

My Dodge will throw a P1684 code without a check engine light if the battery has been disconnected within the last 50 start cycles. The purpose is to let inspectors know that the codes have been recently cleared and is intended to prevent someone from clearing the codes right before they go in for an emissions test rather than fixing the underlying problem. The Prius should have something similar.

In texas they check the readiness of the sensors to ensure they are working and haven't been reset. On model year 2001 and newer you can have one system "not ready" and still pass. 2 on older vehicles. Also MIL status must be off regardless of the cause. P1684 won't fail a dodge in texas as long as the systems are reported as ready and functional and the MIL is off.
