I used my Prius extensively for trips. Next goal is to Alaska. A few of years back there is nice discussion for driving there, I just wonder if there is still some people interesting to do same. Now it is nice summer time, if we can go together, it will be safer and more fun.

My grandfather was stationed out of Alaska in wwii and went back every summer I can remember to visit his old navy buddies.

He drove (usually a pickup with a camper) the alcan and lost either a headlight or a windshield (sometimes both) almost every time.

Yet he went back every summer, that should tell u something about Alaska its the most beautiful state most of the year and the most vicious the rest of the year.

You can't tell how big it is on most maps but my dad grew up there and one of their motos was "if those damn Texans dont watch themselves we're going to split in 2 and make Texas the third largest state in the country".

For any Prii coming North to AlCan from the Miwest or East Coast:
    Trans-Canada 16 closed East of Saskatoon , Saskatchewan .
Some lanes closed on other roads due to high water.
    Some ferries closed.
    BUT, the natives are friendly.

    Progress report:
So far a small crack in windshield due to hail strike in Manitoba , and front covered in bugs, but on track to start AlCan tomorrow .
Extremely strong headwinds dropped mpg to 50, but hard to figure with liters.
    GAS VERY EXPENSIVE--about $5 a gallon. (but some non-ethanol?)
Recommend Ukrainian Cultural Center East of Edmonton.
Use bypass for Edmonton !--interstate roads thru it have unexpected stop lights!!
    Will camp en route.
Have mosquito spray and bear spay, but no hair spray (poor DW!).
Remember to press "km/h mph" button to left of radio volume control when you enter Canada and speed limits are in kph.
Recommend you Get official Provincial road maps as you enter each province.

If you just figure the conversion of km/h to mph, you can leave it on mph and know your mpg.

    Come on up, folks!
Although prices for food, gasoline, and motels are high, campgrounds are reasonable and the people both on the Canadian and Alaskan sections of the AlCan highway are very nice.
Wish you were all here with us !!!

(On a technical note, the gasoline in Yukon and Alaska is pure, no added ethanol, and our display-indicated mpg has now increased to 59-60 mpg compared to 53-54 when using the ethanol mix on similar stretches of AlCan in B.C. The 55 mph we drive up here is comparable to the 90 kph we drove down there, so I don't think we have altered speed or driving style significantly. Anyone else see those differences?)
