Mechanic Labor rate

    I'm in Los Angeles, and am wondering what ballpark hourly labor rate I should expect from mechanics.

    I'm looking to do a strut/shock repair on my 99 Corolla, and was told it'd take ~4 hours and cost 475 for labor alone. This seems high to me, so I thought I'd ask here. (I also own a Prius, and come to this forum with this, because the community is so great.)

    If you send me a PM, I can refer you to some local shops that work on imports. I would think any competent mechanic can do it, just call around and see what rates you're given.

    I did look up the price at repairpal.com and it seems very expensive for the 99 corolla. Not sure why.

    What kind of strut repair do you speak of or is it replacement? But anyways, back when I had my shop, the going hourly rate was about $105/hr, but that was mostly due to working on a lot of modified vehicles. I did a lot of flat rate stuff for common things that are very quick to do. If you don't mind hanging around so I can get my garage set up (I still need to get a compressor, dig out my air tools, and replace some sockets and wrenches that have grown legs and disappeared), I wouldn't mind taking care of it for you if you're near the SFV. Alignment would be on you.

    JC I will pm you for some more recs; I like my mechanic but it wouldn't hurt to get some more context.

    C25A how long do you think it'd take for you to get your shop up and running?

    And the "repair" of which I speak is in fact a complete replacement.

    Probably a few weeks. I'm waiting on a good sale for a nice sized compressor at Harbor Freight. I also need to find my stand spring compressor. That thing was really nice when I was doing a lot of lowering springs when I had my shop. Or I can do the on car method.

    Oh, and since it's a Corolla, I won't install anything except for KYB or better ;) I have standards, you know. :D
