I have a new project. I just got this 04 gen 2 with 95k miles salvage title. I'm going to replace the control arm and strut first. Check the alignment numbers. Once I get it going straight I'll worry about the body work. I have been waiting for a while to find a beater Hybrid car to work on.

The bumper brackets that hold up the bumpers are cool.......from far away, you can't even tell it's missing the front corner.

It runs and drives with no dash lights on. I just bought a used strut. I will instal the strut and see if it can be aligned first. If that all goes as planned I can repair the cosmetic damage and be driving my new toy.

awesome. the damage looks minor and as long as there are no codes being thrown the drive line should be good.

I am thinking the system must be fine too. The replacement aftermarket hood will be steel instead of the Oem aluminum hood. The repaired vehicle will be a bit heavier but that should not hurt anything too badly.

I put 4 new struts in my gen 3 and it worked great. In this case I am working on a tight budget on this crashed gen 2. Replacing in pairs might be optimal but optimal car service at a high price is not what most people want including myself. If I replaced in pairs I would already have done an extra strut, control arm and sway bar link on this car.

I recall another poster had installed the aftermarket steel hood and was dissatisfied with the fit. If there is any way you can get a used original equipment hood from a salvage yard, you may end up with better results.

I will start looking for a used hood instead.

I am of the opinion that only a fairly skilled and performance oriented driver will appreciate the subtlety of perfectly matched suspension components. Most of us drive our cars at about 40% of their handling capability and cannot tell much of a difference. We can even have compromised components and not realize it until it gets so bad that it clatters, vibrates, or gives a hop or two after a bump.

I bought my prius on a salvage title too, does anyone know the negatives of having a car on a salvage title?

    No manufacturer's warranty coverage
Insurance company comprehensive coverage may be limited, check with your agent
    Resale value is questionable

Presumably, an insurance company will not designate an accident vehicle as a salvage write-off unless the repair cost approaches or exceeds market value. Hence, you might consider how is it possible for someone to repair the car properly and still be able to sell it at a substantial discount to market value, which is required given the salvage title?

For example, if airbags were triggered in a front-end accident, were new components installed (as required by auto manufacturer service policy) or were they replaced with used components? Or perhaps, even no components? It is hard for an owner to assess how well the SRS system will work unless you have another accident that triggers the airbags.

If there are any problems with the airbags the light would be on. The main concern is the structural integrity. Is the crumple zone already crumpled.

not trying to hijack your thread, but I figured you were in a similar situation. I didn't intend to buy a salvage and I feel the dealer wasn't totally honest, but it was the only way I could afford a prius, and I drive for work. I've put 20k miles on my car in the year that ive had her. I am concerned about the rearend and suspension, but since this is my 1st prius Im not sure if it is right or if its just me. thanks

I have bought two wrecked prii. Both of them looked way worse than yours and are clean titles. It's very common for clean title cars to have damage history. My first fix was a deer hit. I had to replace the bumper, hood, both fenders, windshield, fuse box, inverter mounts, and other misc. It drove great, never had issues after I fixed it. Doing all my own work at a friends body shop I had it fixed with aftermarket body panels and road ready for half the KBB value. I sold it after 3 months when I purchased a higher mileage prius, also smashed. Both of them I had fixed for about $4k.

I've seen many "salvage cars" with less damage. It's all about the insurance writer and what he/she feels like writing up that day. I've seen "parts cars" that could have easily been fixed. It sucks when a car has a salvage title because so many people are scared of them. If fixed properly they're just as good as most other cars on the road. The problem is when things don't get fixed the right way. I've never had problems with my wrecked prii. I'm on my 3rd right now. I'm keeping this one. Modifications to come.

Post accident alignment update : First I did the control arm. The wheel on the accident side was obviously still way off camber, the top of the wheel tilted inwards quite a bit ( negative camber) . After replacing the strut the camber is only out of spec by 0.1 degrees. I just ordered an eccentric bolt that allows for an extra degree of camber adjustment. This should allow me to adjust the camber right to the center of the spec. As for caster, it is within the specified range but only by 0.1 degrees. I just hope the caster doesn't go out of spec when I adjust the camber with the eccentric bolt. I guess adjusting the caster involves using a frame straightening machine or lengthening the strut mount holes in the body into slots to allow the strut mount location to be moved forward and back. GM cars regularly get these holes filed into slots to adjust caster. Many sports cars come with slots from the factory to adjust the caster. I have never heard of anyone filing the strut mount holes in a Toyota but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I could use a frame straightening rack if needed but I want to avoid the hassle and expense.

A little paint and some chinese body parts and this Prius is looking pretty good. Not perfect but I am still pleased with the cost and outcome.
I still need to pay the dmv. I may need replace one of the front wheel bearings too.
Overall it is very close to completely repaired and re titled.

Curious as to what your total expenses have been so far? Car and all related repair costs.
