Startup get red triangle then problem icon on multifunction display

    Been happening sometimes on startup

    Just a few min of driving from a cold start I Get an audible chime, red triangle exclamation symbol stays lit. "Problem"shows on MFD then a yellow icon shows at the top left corner appears.

    After driving a few minutes the red triangle and yellow symbol on MFD disappear.

    2004 prius

    no codes logged on the scanguage ii

    Background. Bought car used 1 mos ago 117mi unknown battery history.
    12v under load in maintenance mode is usually 13.8v seen it dip to 13.7v, tried with and without headlights as a load system voltage at 13.8v

    any ideas?

    headlight position sensor. its super easy to replace. located in the rear of the car by the driverside rear axle. it attaches to the frame and the suspension. it adjusts the position of the HID headlights. the previous design was known to have problems allowing moisture into the sensor corrupting the contacts. its nothing major but it does cost between 190-300 to replace depending on the dealer for the part

    Ok. Thanks a lot. I will look into replacing this part.

    The warnings doesn't happen all the time. And I know for certain it wasn't when I had the lights on.

    Odd that the prius would check it randomly or the sensor is going on the fritz

    I attempted to clean the sensor out however the traces fell to pieces. :eek: I sprayed it with some Wd40 specialized anti seize that I used to remove the rusty bolts. Did no good because when I drive I see the warning more frequently.

    Anyways did some searching and found a Dorman third party replacement 924755 headlight leveling sensor from Rockauto 62+shipping and ordered it.

    I'll update after I install whether the warning goes away.

    i noticed on my 04 that it would check the sensor every 4 starts after the codes were cleared. but as soon as the new one was installed the system recognized it right away and removed the lights on the dash. you may be able to get a sensor on ebay for cheap around 60 bucks or so. the redesign part has better seals and corrosion protection

    The third party replacement came in a few days ago. Been driving and no more error!! Hooray. Today I had a chance to take apart the head light leveling sensor. Can you say the old one was toast? :p

    that is what the one looked like in my 04. yeah its pretty much toast. LOL. Grats on the replacement, and glad it fixed the problem. :)

    By the way your 12 volt battery investigation was not quite right. All the numbers you quoted would be from the car in ready and that's charging voltage not battery under load.

    Load is push button twice with no brake pedal. Then measure.

    Had exact same problems last fall, once it got around 20 degrees F outside, the 12V was dead. Replaced the 12V, and haven't seen the problem since.
