Okay, so I won't stand out by saying I like the smart key system. It's a neat novelty. But sometimes it's a little too smart.

I find myself always accidentally locking my passengers out when I get into the car - I open the driver's door, and the other doors don't unlock.

So here's the question: is there a way to make the DRIVER door act like the passenger or trunk door and unlock EVERYTHING?

Yes, the instructions are in your owner's manual around page 30(?). It involves pressing buttons on the fob to do what you want. BTW I lovelovelovelove Smart Key!!!! I won't get another car without it!

The dealer can alter the behavior of the SKS. One of the options is to have the driver's door open all doors.

No need to go to the dealer. As mcbrunnhilde said, the instructions are in your Owners' Manual.

Or, you can see Wayne's post in this thread.

Why would you go to the dealer for something so simple? No wonder they take advantage of people.

Page 32, third column, owners manual........Push the lock and panic buttons, on your keyfob, at the same time, for 5 seconds. The car will beep 2 times. Each time you do this routine the cycle changes. 1 beep=Single door , 3 beeps= drivers door, you want 2 beeps= all doors. :D

No need to get upset about it, 9G ;) It's an easy one to miss in the manual (although it's a change I made the first day I had my Prius, he he!). As for taking it to the dealer, if you have a nice, honest dealer, they'd probably do that for you for no charge because it takes all of 10 seconds. I have a feeling their other cars w/ smart key do it the same way, so a tech wouldn't have to look it up in a manual or anything.

My mistake. I like the default behavior, so I paid no attention to the details. Of course, my post is correct: the dealer can change the default behavior. :p

    1. There'd be no need for this thread if the OP RTFM

    2. Driving to the dealer uses gas and time (both non-renewable resources)

    3. Saying that, our Pri may have a problem: 1 touch on the driver's door unlocks the driver's side door. However, 2 touches on the driver's door unlocks all the doors except the driver's side passenger door. Weird, huh? I can unlock all the doors using a) the passenger side door, b) the fob or c) the hatch...but not the driver side. No biggie. Will have the dealer look at it at the 5000 mile oil change

    4. I wish I could figure out, despite several searches of this forum, if it is or is not possible to program a 3rd "MOZB31EG" smart key myself. Given the fact that I already have 2 working keys and understand the car can support 4, it seems this should be a no brainer. Kinda like a new garage door opener? Seems you could on the old model Prius. Just not sure about the current one. Yes? No? thanks!

I should also add that my wife loves the smart key. She keeps it in her bag and basically can get access to the vehicle and drive it without even knowing she has it. You essentially forget about the fact that you either have or need a key (until you lose it - see #4, above). It's like a Jetson's episode! I also love the little things about it, such as how the car senses your presence and turns on the interior lights. Fantastic!

Sure, you can do it yourself, if you have the Toyota Scan Tool to tell the SKS ECU about the new fob. Otherwise, the dealer gets to recoup the cost of the Scan Tool by charging what the market will bear. Call around to several dealers to get the best price.

Seems to me you could just swallow the thing, and not worry about it at all.

It's an experiment that I would not want to try more than ONCE, for a number of reasons.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'd LOVE to RTFM, but my used 05 didn't come with one. They promised to mail me a second key and manual with my new plates (bought the car in MD, I'm in PA) but I've gotten none of them yet (and it's been 3 weeks and 2400 miles, argh). Is there any way to find an online copy of the manual? Searching the forums hasn't turned up anything yet.

on the fob hold both the unlock button and the panic button together for about 5 seconds (near the car) There are 3 modes. You will hear confirmation beeps.
1.) drivers door unlocks only drivers door, pass and cargo unlocks all (factory setting)
2.) drivers, pass, and cargo opens all doors
    3.) only depressed door unlocks

I heard a story that someone's large dog swallowed their SKS fob. They had to take their dog with them to unlock and operate their Prius.

MAKE SURE you get that second fob (and the programming) from the dealer. They are expensive, and should have been included (yeah, the manual is a little bit important as well!!!).
