Questions about CVT transmission

Its not clear to me why you say the HSD is not a CVT. CVT stands for Continuously Variable Transmission. No mention of pulleys or cones or anything else about how it does what it does.
Variable diameter pulley transmissions were the first type of CVT that many of us heard of but that does not mean that they are the only class of CVT.
Calling the HSD an e-CVT is an attempt to convey how it functions as well as what it accomplishes. Unfortunately e-CVT infers that its a purely electrical device which is incorrect. em-CVT (electromechanical CVT) would be probably better as it would convey its electromechanical nature
Similarly, it would make sense to call a variable diameter pulley transmission a vdp-CVT, and call a magnetic CVT a mag-CVT.

 

That's because Toyota calls it an e-CVT. So to me, that's what it is. They do not call it a CVT.

 

e-CVT is not ideal but its not a bad term to use. It's concise, it makes it clear that its different from other CVTs and Toyota uses the term.

That does not mean that calling the HSD a CVT is wrong. Just as a Prius is a car of a particular type, an e-CVT is a CVT of a particular type.

I think of it as a special type of CVT with different technology, different characteristics and significant benefits.

 

they all use ws *world standard* only available to get at the toyota dealership as far as I know. may be able to find it online but its pretty cheap at the dealership. its like $4.00 a quart

 

More like 8 - 10 the last time I purchased.

 

It's $14 a quart at my dealer. Not sure where anyone can buy at $4. My wholesale supplier sells it to me at $7

The trouble about buying from Amazon or ebay is that it is full of counterfeit goods, esp if the price is better than anywhere else.

Stopped using those two websites for that reason. Too many examples of poor quality items being received and a significant lack of interest from those sites to investigate. No thank you. Not for me.

Where can one purchase the oil from a more reliable source?

 

I could be wrong, but I believe the items sold in the Amazon link are sold by Daytona Toyota in Daytona Beach FL, the logo is the same. Am I wrong?

 

And they are? And how easy is it to set up as a seller with any name you want. Maybe the policing by Amazon in the US is different to here but I'll never buy anything from them again.

Don't get me wrong, you have to watch the sellers over here too, though I suspect feedback would put most out of business eventually. I was just saying that this appears to be an Amazon store run by an actual Toyota dealer, so it looks safe enough to me. I rarely buy from any seller other than Amazon, Fulfilled by Amazon or a dealer I or some I know has had experience with, like Beach Camera, Adorama, etc.

 

Very strange. We are a Prime customer and probably purchase something through Amazon on an average of twice a month (not including our many E-books). We have never received a product that didn't appear to be exactly what was shown on the website. However, we've returned items that weren't the right size or that didn't provide the functions we had in mind. Most of the time they pay the return shipping costs. Whenever there is any confusion we can contact them easily and they quickly resolve the issue.

 

I've always (twice now) picked it up through the dealership parts department. Last time it was $9.33 per liter. Readily available. They have the drain/fill bolt washers too, for 95 cents apiece. The correct terminology for the fluid is WS-ATF.

And you live in California where Amazon come from. I guess they don't mess on their own doorstep and the original 'meaning' of the company is held dear and close. Move it 4,000 miles away and a lot of that is lost perhaps? If I remember correctly VW has a bad reputation in the US but back in Germany they can do no wrong. Similar thing maybe?

But I'll never use Amazon again other than maybe something they hold in stock themselves like a book, but never from an independent seller.

 

Very strange logic. Amazon's home is Seattle, 1000 miles from here. Many of the items I order come from the East Coast. I understand that UPS and FedEx don't exchange real products for fake ones during transit

 

If I can drive a few blocks, pick up something that's sitting on a shelf, that works for me. I appreciate it got shipped from somewhere, sometime, but I try to avoid getting things shipped another time, when local purchase is dead simple.

 

Some folks like to shop at a store, some don't. Food yes, other stuff not so much.

 

Are the crush washers for the oil drain plug the same ones used for the cvt?
