I can't believe Toyota didn't put a filter on these. That picture is just scary!

I have only had my car for almost a year now and the fan seems to come on after 40km/hr and can hear is louder as I drive faster. This seemed to happen in the evenings of last month only. The thing is - I don't have any pets in the car and the interior is immaculately clean...lol. Maybe time I take apart some things to get to the fan too.

Agreed, Toyota should have put a filter for this battery fan.. Maybe their logic is that any incoming air would get filtered first by the front cabin filter before making its way to the back fan?

Great job on showing us the clogged fan blades :)

I'm going to ask the service manager to take a picture of my fan when they take it apart. I'm really curious to see what it looks like now.

With so few miles and a 2010, I'm suspecting the Las Vegas heat is more your issue.

without pets, there is no need for a filter. they should at least put a warning.

The only reason I'm hesitant on heat being the issue is that I've been through 4 1/2 summers now with the car and the fan has never made this much noise. Until the last few weeks I've only heard it turn on a handful of times, or if it was on it was low speeds and unnoticeable.

Had a few sheets of acoustic sound deadener, dynamat, apply and then pressure down with a small roller.

It looks as though the OP "E" is working with a good dealer. They are few and far between. I myself am also lucky when it comes to that aspect. The dealer I use seems to be very good at what they do, and they treat you with "respect". The name of the dealer is Fred Haas Toyota in Spring, TX.

To the OP, I do suspect the problem will be the fur in the fan. Once the dealer tears it down, more than likely the fan will have some sort of obstruction. I also suggest that you rig up some filter media and to change the media regularly. That way the fan will stay clean and the air will continue to flow to the traction battery. It is important to keep the temperature of the traction battery as cool as physically possible. With you being in the desert, you are working with a double whammy when you consider all the factors. One being the heat, and the other being the dog shedding it's fur.

On another note, if the dealer finds the fan plugged up with the fur, it would be a good idea to check and clear all of the duct work going to the traction battery as well as actually inspecting the entire traction battery for foreign material such as dog hair. The entire pack needs to be kept clean and clear of any foreign objects for correct thermal maintenance. That is what the fan is supposed to do.

Best of luck with your quest, and I believe you will find once this problem has been solved you will get many years of trouble free service from your Prius.

During my research today I came across a part that Toyota started making in 2012 - a clip on filter for the battery vent. I went a head and ordered one. I figured it's probably a good thing to have no matter what the outcome, especially having a dog. Part number is G92DH-47020 and is discussed in this thread:

Whatever your situation, a filter at the inlet doesn't hurt. Even if it ends up being overkill. No news is good news.

    Hello

First post here. I bought a 2011 Prius III on Wednesday. Its was a leased vehicle with 1 owner 37000 miles. First thing I did was get home and clean the car. I found a lot of dog hair in the back hatch. The next day I read this post.....I got a bit concerned so I took the seat out and the rear panels. I finally got the fan out which wasn't too dirty. I decided to take off the Hybrid battery cover off as well and use my air compressor. Im glad I did cause I was able to get a lot of dog hair and dust out. My next project will be noise reduction.

I think what you did is good preventative maintenance. I will remind you though of the factor of the high voltage which is lethal inside the traction battery. The voltage is in the area of 270 volts DC which is lethal if you get in the path of the flow of the electrons.

Sounds like you got a great car and have begun a quest for maintenance of your vehicle. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you enjoy your new to 2011 Prius III. There is a wealth of information that can be found on Prius Chat. Also Google will reveal just about anything you need to know about your Prius and also point you back to Prius Chat. I think you will find that you won't need to ask many questions. Most of the questions have already been asked about the Prius. With a little searching with Google, you should be able to find the answers you need fairly easy. However, don't be afraid to ask questions. Sometimes it is best to start a new string. The admin's have requested that anytime a new string is created, that a search of the topic is done before the string is created. That helps to keep the server load to a minimum. Prius Chat is free, and is supported I believe by the Prius Shop. I thank Danny and all the other admin's here for this site. It is the best site out there IMO concerning the Toyota Prius.

Best of luck to you and "Welcome" to Prius Chat!"

It's amazing how often I google something and Prius Chat is the top result. I can't possibly read all the past posts, so I google stuff and find the ones I'm interested in that way.

Just wanted to update everyone. The dealer took out the fan and brought it out for me to look at. It was very clean and had almost no dust at all in it. There goes the dog hair theory.

The manager and I ended up taking the car for a drive so I could show him what's going on. When we got up to about 30 mph the fan kicked right into over drive. He said to "I can understand how that might be annoying." I'm not sure why i thought of it but I asked the manager if the latest recall could have anything to do with this. He said if was quite possible since the recall dealt with the hybrid systems ... perhaps the fan settings were altered. He said he was going to look into it and let me know what he finds out. Everything else in the car checks out normal.

As an experiment I cranked the a/c on the way home (I was pretty chilly) and the fan turned off about 15 min into the trip. It was probably 95-98 degrees outside.

So that's where I stand now. If I hear anything back I'll update.
