Reasons for blank MFD?

    Hi all,

Had some issue's with the Prius recently which thanks to this forum I tracked down to the 12v battery. The MFD was fine at this point, apart from the clock being off.

Replaced the battery, and since then the MFD has been blank.

The Fuses in the bonnet are ok. Any other idea's what could be wrong?

Toyota have said the ECU resets whenever the battery is disconnected, so that the ECU should have recognised the MFD again.

Toyota say $150 to do a diagnostic check for bad earths or whatever.

I can get another MFD (2nd hand) for about $200 inc postage.

Question 1: Worth the Toyota diagnostic for $150?

Question 2: Would any other (non-nav) MFD from a S2 (NHW20) Prius be compatible with my 2008? e.g. there's no difference to a 2004/2005/2006/2007/2008 MFD.

Question 3: My MFD has the nav connector at the back, even though it doesn't have the nav button at the front. I guess Toyota used the same connectors at the back for all MFD's, and just changed the front of the units. Just curious. Tried to find MFD connection images online to compare, but no luck so far.

Question 4: Maybe I should disconnect the battery again and see if that revives the MFD?

Since you pulled the battery, you reset your car. The MFD just maybe in the off mode! I just went out, turned mine off. To turn back hit Display, if nothing pops up hit Radio, that screen will come up, if I am correct, then hit Display, hit OK! Screen should stay on after this!

    Thanks for the reply.

I've hit 'Display' and all the buttons to see if it would do anything. Unfortunately nothing. Still blank (as if there's no power to it).

I don't have a 'Radio' button on mine iirc.

I wonder if it's upset I pulled the Pioneer Head Unit out of the car (replacing it soon)?

Can anyone confirm there are only 3 connectors for the standard MFD? Two for the MFD and one for the clock?

There are fuses for the system in the interior fuse panel. Did you check them, too?

I did when I was trying to find out why the Head Unit wasn't working (and the clock of the MFD was off). I didn't find any burned out but then I changed the battery. I will check again asap. Real pain to get to though as you have to take the whole dash apart :)
