2005 Prius with 127k...I purchased with the (!), ABS, VSC lights on and repaired the fender, bumper cover and headlight..The car drives well and the brakes are great....Ive purchased a few in the past that have been sitting for a while and usually the lights go out after driving a bit....I cleared the codes using a jumper wire and they returned.

    My codes are
    (!) 36
ABS 31 which I believe is (RIGHT FRONT WHEEL OR SPEED SENSOR)

VSC 43.....43 means "capacitor malfunction" and the suspect areas include the brake control power supply, ABS #1 fuse, ABS #2 fuse, ABS #3 fuse, or the associated wiring harness?

I found the past Toyota maintenance log and it has both front wheel bearings replaced 2 years ago but no info on who the dealer was.....Any ideas on a solution?

Could be lots of things unfortunately i.e. 12V aux battery, brake stroke sensor, anti skid ECU, OBD fuse.

Start with the 12V battery check:

Toyota Prius: How to Check the 12v Auxiliary Battery Health - PriusDIY.com

If the battery has not been replaced, you're probably due.

To work on this car in any capacity, order a mini VLC; for example:

2014 NEW Mini VCI TIS Techstream V9 00 Diagnostic Cable FOR Toyota | eBay

...you'll need a laptop with Win XP for easy install.

This will allow you to read/reset codes; essential for the Prius (or $100 and a trip to the dealer wheneven a code pops up).

Check the ABS fuses....pull the +ve from the aux battery and take an ohm meter across all the fuses under the hood (I think there are four) and under the dash (one...but check them all while you're upside down)....takes maybe an hour and may provide a clue.

The wheel sensor code can be checked initially by taking off the wheel and having a look. Make sure the sensor is where it should be, and is clean. There have been reports of this code coming up from a chipped tooth on the sensor wheel, which can be seen inside the hole where the sensor goes. You can rotate the wheel and see if it is OK. (Car in neutral, wheels blocked.)

The VSC 43 comes up in 12V problems. If the battery is too low at start up there is a current surge to charge that cap bank that will trigger this.

Can I get a copy pic here on the site of the sensor? I guess thats my next move..Ive had several gen 2 cars and never encountered anything other than crazy dash lights (at least..more than just one) resulting in needing a new battery...I guess its probable the other lights will go out if its just the wheel sensor..Also Ive cleared the code 3 times and every time its come back after driving like 10 yards

This may be a battery issue after all..Just finished cleaning the right front wheel sensor. besides appearing a bit dirty everything looked fine...cleared the codes and this is what i get......

ABS 31 and 35: RF speed sensor malfunction. Metal sticking to sensor.

I assume this car was in a front-end accident, so carefully inspect the sensor and the toothed rotor as one or both may have been damaged. Also check the wiring harness connection to the sensor as the cable may have been damaged.

I suggest you compare to the left front side to be sure, but it looks like the sensor is broken and the RF wheel was reassembled without the toothed ring.

    Is that a

Hub Unit with integrated wheel speed sensor? or can I just buy the ring and install?
    thank you

I believe the toothed ring is supposed to be part of the driveshaft, because it is not on the wheel hub.

However, please look at the left front side, to be sure.

The other side has the shaft with the ring and today i ordered the half shaft for the right side front..i guess the dealer who installed the bearings did not replace the right front ring..Going to replace and clear codes and see the outcome.

Received the shaft today. Started taking the existing shaft off and found part of the shaft was covering the toothed ring. Took the broken piece out put it back together. Test drove for about a mile and just upon coming to a complete stop had the little skid icon light flashed....Shortly after that all the lights came back on and got the same codes :(

+ve is in reference to emitter voltage on a transistor. B+ is the correct reference. B as in battery.

    1. What exactly was broken?

    2. Did you compare the physical appearance of the sensor on the problem wheel vs. the sensor on the other side of the car?

    3. What is the condition of the toothed ring, did you fully rotate the ring 360 degrees to inspect every tooth for damage?

I'm not sure exactly since the dealer maintaince records show both wheel bearings were changed but it was a ring shaped cover that was loosely spinning over the toothed ring. The sensor looks damaged. I did not compare it to the other side but it appears damaged compared to the new one that I recently received. The toothed ring was rotated and looks fine. The car is out getting new paint and I will install new sensor when I get the car back
