Found a 2008 prius with 181k miles on it for $ 5500. Ran a car fax on it and it had 1 owner and 2 minor accidents that resulted in scratches to paint and small dents to the body. They also replaced the tires A LOT...The battery was replaced at 169k miles as well as water pump and brakes. Question is...should I buy or not? I don't wanna buy any car with that many miles but I really need the gas mileage bc I commute 2 hr drive every day. Please help asap. Have to make a decision by morning!!

A car that had that many tire replacements can only mean there's a tire wear problem. Unless you know how to work on cars, I would suggest you don't buy this one. With your long commute, this car will be over 200k miles in 1 year

Q: Is the Prius from a dealer or private seller?
Q: Which battery are you talking about?
    Q: Model # ( 2 or 3 )
Q: Have you test drove it, yet?
Q:What is the carfax value ?

    Not enough info!!

If the Prius has a new hybrid battery ( the big battery ); the price is OK.:cautious:
KBB; fair condition from private party is $ 5796.(y)

If the Prius wears tires.... you need all 4 tire alinement ( might have to put spacers in) and balanced.
That along should bring down the price.:)

    ???

Too many miles for a car that will need to be driven 2 hours each day. I would look for a car with lower miles, even if its a small non-hybrid car.

you'll save more money by buying a used corrola than you will in gas savings with a prius.

Update. Bought the vehicle. From a private seller who buys cars and resells them. Car fax LOOKED good...until we drive to Florida (from ga)...hybrid warning light came on...took it to the nearest dealership to look at it. Hybrid battery needs replaced bc one of the modules has a bad cell not putting off enough volts. They wanted 3600 to fix it. We don't have the money so we are chancing it and driving it 7.5 hours home. .. This sucks. I know nothing about these cars.

I would pass on it. The car is worn out. You will have a lot of expensive repairs.

You'd better have someone who can pick you up because it's very likely you won't make it all the way home with a bad hybrid battery. Here's hoping anyway.

    Sorry to here that!!
On high mileage Prius's, the hybrid battery is what you have to be concerned about.
Let that seller know about it!!
    Might have warranty on it???

We're going to chance it. Anyone know if the hybrid battery dies completely how far we can make it off on the gas engine? Or if we can at all?

bummer. you can't drive it at all with a dead hybrid battery, it turns over the ice to start it.

So far so good. We got 6 bars of battery on the screen...it drives fine. ..but we still have the hybrid warning light and the big triangle with exclamation mark as well as check engine light. But the battery charge levels aren't fluctuating rapidly like I've heard it does when it fails. .so I guess that's good. We have 7 hours to go till our destination.

Ok so we have drove 5 hours so far. 2 1/2 hours to go till home. 100 miles into our trip, the Hybrid warning light and the red triangle with exclamation mark inside of it went off and has not been back on. It's weird..I'm very thankful...but it's weird that it would do that. We're averaging 40 mpg and the battery is staying charged. Anyone ever experience thus before? Forgot to mention that the cluster board is getting replaced next week...bc it stopped working on monday but started back after we left the dealership.

That is really strange. If you actually had a bad hybrid battery it's very unlikely the warning lights would have disappeared.

Maybe the stealership was attempting a walletdectomy. Hate those b*******, I do.

You should invest in a cheap DTC code scanner. Another option is the Torque app for Android. It is less than $5 at Google Play if you have a smartphone and if you buy an $8 ELM327 bluetooth microcontroller/translator from Ebay. You can then use Torque to read the codes when the triangle of death reappears - and Torque allows you to see engine RPM, coolant temp, and lots of other outputs from OBDII.

We had experience of hybrid battery warning light coming on, then shutting off, on a Civic Hybrid.

There's likely stored codes, you should try to get them read.

I don't want to paint the darkest scenario..., maybe I do:

It doesn't smell good that you just bought this car and then the warning lights come on. I'm not that knowledgeable, but my speculation turns to a seller doing some sort of bandage treatment to mask symptoms. Maybe a simple 12 volt battery disconnect, maybe an in-car hybrid reconditioning. Just enough to make it behave through the sales process. Just trying to cheer you up. ;)

Maybe someone can weigh in? For example, some battery conditioners require an extra wiring harness leading away from the battery, say into the hatch area. Something to look for under the sub-floor?

Well...we left Florida at 430am and made it home at 3pm. No problems whatsoever. Light never came back on. Still going to get the dealership to look at it when they put the cluster board in it tomorrow. If it weren't for my husband's good judgment we would be out 3300 this trip.

    You might try unplug 12 volt battery for several minutes;
    then hook it up again.
    It might reset somethings???

    What "cluster board" ?

I'll guess that you were not speeding on the way home, so the 40 MPG is way below expected. That is another hint that a major component is failing. About that traction battery repair -- was it a new battery, refurb, or module replacement ?

You really need to pull error codes. I have my fingers crossed for you, but there are so many ways this story can turn out sad. For the future please realize that driving with alarms is a recipe for expensive repairs, particularly if you do not know the reason for the alarm.

The alarms went off...The traction battery has never been repaired or replaced..just the aux battery was replaced 12k miles ago. We were going like 65-75 most of the way home depending on the speed limit. The cluster board is the dash that tells how fast you are going and how much gas you have and all of the "trouble lights". That's what the guy at the dealership called it. We know there is something wrong..but we don't want to pay 3300 for a new battery and it not be the battery and it be something else. We don't want to spend big money unless that's for sure what is wrong.
