Hi. I just bought a used 2008 Prius, which seems to be in excellent condition except for the fuel door staying open. The hinge works, but the latch does not keep the door closed.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

This is the first I've heard of this problem. Has the car been in an accident?

Try spraying a little WD-40 in the latch that keeps it shut. Could be that it is stuck.

The latch (on the fuel door) is a piece of sheet metal, it may have gotten bent so that the pin doesn't engage it. Just bend it back if that's the case.
Is the latch pin (in the body) working properly when you pull the lever?

I agree with Thump, the tab that holds it locked got bent. Bend it back.

There's some sort of cable running from the drivers door sill to the latch. Something hanging up with that?

I thought I uploaded this picture yesterday -- it does not seem to have stuck.

I looked at the pin that is operated by the cable into the fuel door well. Could it be broken off? It is very short, protrudes only about 1/8 inch, and barely moves when you pull the lever in the driver's compartment. Here is a picture:

Yeah that's not right. Took a look at ours; it's sticking out a bit more than 1/4".

In your pic it looks kinda chewed up: maybe someone pried it open to siphon gas, sheared it off??

You goaded me into action; been trying to post an image with an IPhone, but it seems to be broken. Posting in general has been a bit flakey, Prone to hang, the last few days.

My pin looks that way when it got stuck in the open position, I used a needle nose pliers to pull it out, then used some dry lube spray, but it happened again. I then bent the flap on the fuel cover door in a little bit, until it just barely would catch on the pin, and now remember not to pull all the way on the fuel release lever, just enough to release the flap and haven't had the problem again.

now that you mention it, mine is electric, no cable. the pin works similarly though.

Okay I will try with needle nose plier. I used a long nosed plier but that did not grab the pin.

Is it possible to trace the cable? Where do I have to look?
