Looking for some advice because maybe I am just crazy. Have an '08 Prius Touring, 66 000 miles, leather seats, nav system, back up camera, 6 disc audio system with aux. Minor nicks and scratches on the hood and roof, and some minor wear on the leather seats. Carmax offered me $8000 today. They stated the car was in great condition, minor wear and tear, low mileage, and the only defect they noted was that two of the side doors had been painting indicating a minor accident possibly (two owners prior to me), but clean history and no structural issues or mechanical issues. I love the car and am only looking to sell because I am relocating out of the country. Am I crazy or is $8000 a totally lowball number? On the same lot they are selling three 08's with 70,000+ miles all for $15900...I didn't expect anywhere near that amount, but $8000?

In Virginia, outside the DC area. Glad someone else sees the insanity. Everyone told me carmax was usually pretty reasonable with their appraisals so I was hoping for 12k, would have settled for 11k, but 8 seems way too low

It's no obligation. This is a 3 owner car at 66k miles. You can't say it's not a red flag. list it on here for $11k

Your Prius while in excellent condition has painted panels that they have to disclose and a high number of owners for the years. Most buyers if looking at a car identical to yours in every way except all original body and single owner would gladly pay more for the other car. Also CarMax gives a price that they take from auction houses minus a lot of percents so they make a profit. A car for sale for $15K was probably purchased for less than $10K. That's the way of the world. We got $9K for the Lexus RX330 we traded in for the Lexus RX450h at a dealership and the same car was on the lot the next day for $22K sticker. When dealing with higher priced cars it is usually easiest to just take the hit at the dealership than wait around for a private party.

Right now big SUVs are back in style. The Prius is in hot supply and there are no waiting lists and tons burning on the lot. You will not be making out well in the deal to anyone. Private party will be better, but if you have a timeline, even a good private seller will take note and lowball.

Now on the other hand we have a big stupid Jeep that was given to us and we just want to dump it. Private Party for this jeep on KBB is $15,970 for a Fair condition and $17,750 for excellent condition. It has had a new hood (hail damage many years ago) and has been babied its whole life with only 45K on the clock of a 2009. KBB would classify it as "Good". We went to CarMax and they offered us $15K even for it. People love the big SUVs so the auction prices are higher and they can move them quickly off the lot. While there every single car that was taken out of the lot for a testdrive was an SUV. The only exception was an almost new 2014 Mercedes E63 AMG with an original sticker of over $100K going for $58K with 1000miles on it (the limit of a "new" car vs. "used" car). It must have been a dealer loaner/test-drive machine.
