I recently bought 5 CR 2032 batteries for my smart key fob through Amazon. They are Sony batteries with a 2023 expiration date. Apparently they keep a long time. I keep this 5 pack of batteries in my prius glove box in an envelope along with the proper size of jewelers screwdriver so I can change one out anytime I have a problem with a smart key fob battery going dead. That way I am not "dead in the water" if the fob battery goes dead.

Be sure to check to see what battery you have in your smart key fob before ordering.

I hate buying things in bulk, they normally get lost, thrown away, or you sell the car before ever using them all up. In this case, I would buy the 5 and change out all my fob batteries, regardless if they are dead or not. Just to use them up before losing them.

You shouldn't be "dead in the water"... the cut key should still get you in the driver's door and the RFID should still work in the ignition. My spare hide-a-key doesn't have a battery at all.

That said, a lot of things I have take CR 2032's... watches, bike blinkies, alarm clock backup batteries, calculators, etc. Bulk is not too bad for those... I keep them in the same box as my supply of AA's.

That's why I put them in the glove box with the proper size jewelers screwdriver. The batteries are where they are easily found and also a screwdriver to change them out with.

Thank you for pointing that out to me. When I took the battery out of my fob to put it in a hide a key I only tried it like a smart key for starting the car. I just now went out to my Prius and put the batteryless fob in the fob slot on the dash panel and found that I could start the car. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!

^^^ better to keep your spare batteries at home and change them on a well lit, flat surface where you are less likely to drop and lose that small screw, circuit board, or rubber buttons. I've lost several items in my cars over the years when they fall into cracks, crevices, and seat tracks.

Yes I agree and thanks for the suggestion. The reason I was keeping them in the car was so I could change the battery and get the car going again but now that I know that I can put the batteryless fob in the slot in the dashboard and start the car I will be doing the work at home and not in the car..

Surprised you've been keeping batteries for so long in the car.
It's been in the 100's here in So Cal and who knows how much hotter in the glove box.

Good price and purchase suggestion, though. Thanks!

Keep coin cells in their original packaging if you can. If there sloshing around in an envelope they can short each other out.

More importantly keep them away from young children. When swallowed these 20 mm cell have a tendency to get stuck in the esophagus where they hydrolyze body fluids and basically burns through the esophagus leading to fatalities or horrific injuries. Swallowed a Button Battery? | Battery in the Nose or Ear?

My batteries are still in the original package and then inside of and envelope and then inside of a special envelope folder that has all the car related documents in it. What an awful way to die, that is by swallowing a button battery...
