Prius With 4 12s

    before i had a 2002 Prius 1st gen with 2 Fi Q 12s in a small ported, but some had hit me and totaled my car.

    the 2 12s ripped a 14 inch hole because the first gen metal was thin aluminum





    so i end up getting a 2010 Prius


    and heres what i did so far


    2 Crescendo BC2000D together 4000 rms

    upgraded the stock battery with an Optima yellow top d51r

    i'm going to install fans when i get my money right

    the headunit is a DEH-X8600BH


    i plan on adding 2 more Crescendo BC2000D to create 8000 rms and adding 2 xs power 6500 batteries







    i haven't metered the voltage yet but there's little headlight dimming for being on 2 12v battery. i just did a 4 hour drive playing 3/4 of volume and i had no power issue while driving and i thought i would need to charge my batteries over night but my charger said they where still full... still since I've never came home with uncharged batteries

    I dont get it. Fi Q are great SQL subs, but why get 4 and run them sealed. why not run a pair ported intead or use a different fi sub intended for SPL. If you want to impress 12yr olds in a carpark then, with 4 12s,
    you're on the right track

    sealed box have a better sq than ported. i prefer sq over spl. i was just showing the spl side of it but i might try a ported box just to give both side of the face and sell the box i like less. also the box came out of an 02 accord ported wouldn't fit.but so far i love the sound of it already

    I am not sure what sq means. If it means sound quality, you are incorrect.
    There is no good reason to have a sealed enclosure.
    Ported enclosures offer higher efficiency and/or low frequency response and/or less distortion.
    Perhaps you should read up on thiel-small
    Thiele/Small - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
    This was real cutting edge stuff in 1972.

    Of course if you pick an incorrect port size, you will likely gain nothing.

    As for me, my two 12" high efficiency woofers work fine.

    Yes SQ means sound quality. And no ported is not better, but nor is it worse; entirely depends on the design of the subwoofer. The majority of car subs sound better in sealed enclosures, but there are ported orientated ones. And then there's infinite baffle which is essentially a sealed enclosure.

    My issue with multiples is around group delay and cancellation. And that there is no way in hell you'll get front midbass to keep up with them so any thought of SQ goes out the window anyway.

    all right heres a little update. i add 2 more bc2000d

    and i decide to go port, i loved how the sealed sound but i was having problems with it
    1. is i was reaching a limit like theres a point where it wouldnt get any louder when i turn it up.
    2. heating was building up alot inside those box
    3. the back pressure was destroying my sub. i have gone through many recones do to my surround ripping cause of the back pressure

    so i reconed all the sub before going into the new box... look at the cone to the left and see how badly the surround ripped on me

    look at the old coil and new coil look like they are same color (top is new bottom is old) it sucks having to lose perfect coils due to rips in the surround.

    also change the yellow top battery with the sexy xs power d5100 a little modification was need since its taller, the battery cover legs was cut a little so it can sit perfectly on top

    IMPORTANT if you installing subwoofer in a prius take time to reinforce your trunk lock mechanism. the vibration can cause a screw (the size of a toothpick) to crack. this has happened to me after this box was put in and it was HELL! trying to get inside and pop my trunk with the box. i was almost about to brake the box to get in. i fixed it with zipties and a lot of ca glue. that why the black rope is there in case it happens again

    a little more sanding is need on the edge

    Ok, I'll try and be constructive because this isn't a good install.

    You have a factory electrical charging system. From memory it's 8ga cable to the battery. You're running 8k rms off it. That cable won't handle that current over that length. At the very least, please buy a fire extinguisher because the smell of burnt human is difficult to get out of the upholstery. The wiring is dangerous: where are the fuses on the power wires and how are the amps held in place. Do the wiring once and do it right. Welding cable is good quality and is alot cheaper than branded car audio cable. Fuses should be within 12" of each battery. Secure batteries and amplifiers. There's no budget excuse for installation. Your own time is free so take your time doing it correctly.

    Heat: you have amps side by side and on top of each other. 50% of your heatsinks are almost touching. If you are going to run anywhere near the potential of these amps then getting adequate cooling is essential. Surprised you haven't had caps dying.

    Backpressure destroying multiple subs. No, you've exceeded Xmech and the cone edge is ripping through the surround. This is installation and/or user error.

    The enclosure is too big for your space: the ports are blocked. Hardly surprising you've damaged the hatchback and lock. You need to space the ports off the rear. Currently your hatchback is acting as part of the port and will be stuffing up whatever tuning you ported for.

    3x8" per door. Why? A door is a leaky 40litre enclosure and getting solid midbass is one of the harder things to achieve in car audio. Simply put your doors don't have the internal volume nor sealing to support 3 x 8". In this case less is better. If you insist on having 3 then mount a couple of them elsewhere. Staging and sound quality is going to be screwed up by 3x8" in doors so it won't harm you moving 2 of them elsewhere.

    You've posted on SMD forum. Talk to some people there and get them to critique your system.

    Ok i dont know why your so mad for but ok 1st off i had this system in my car over a year now no electric wire fire .... i would upgrade that wire but dont forget it a prius not to many ppl have diagram on the inverter and im not gonna play guess with it...

    As for the amps cooling there is 4 nidec TA350DC fans push air and cools there 3 in the pic above with 2 cheap fan but i took those out when i got my 4th nidec fan and i can tell you those amp have never shut off and went into protect due to over heat with those fans running. And the amps are not touching each other. in the picture above the top 2 amps aren't even connected i just put them there to take a picture

    You got me on the fuse i dont have them yet but i made sure not a single strain of wire was out of place and i didnt worry much about it since it less than 3 foot from the battery

    And also as for the sub ripping when u say "xmech" do you mean xmax, you do know that excursion of a sub is more in sealed than a ported box near it tunning frequencies . so i would be reaching my xmax more in a sealed box. i have had them in the new box since the beginning of this year and with the same headunit and same setting on the amps and they haven't ripped yet... also consider i drive literally everyday my job is an hour away and i play to and from work so thats 2 hours of playing and when my class start that will be a hour and a half extra to and from, so almost 4 hours of playing 5 out of 7 days a week with a couple of road trips here and there and my sub surround still look new compare to how it was in the sealed box. i was going through recones left and right because i kept ripping the surround....

    And when the box was built i wondering if i was choking the port so we tested with the seats down and the box pushed back. And we got the same results with the box in the original spot and pushed back.

    Please take note those 8s are midrange not midbass. Which i want them to keep the vocals up. im aware of how hard it is to get midbass right. I kinda threw out sq concept since it was more to it than meets the eye. And as for a leaky door have you heard of a company called second skin products they sell stuff to help against that which i do plan on using in my doors when i get them made. Only the front doors is getting 3 8s i haven't figured out how im going to do the rear....

    Also i don't post all the stuff i do to my car asap like i stated earlier how long i had the ported box in my car and im just now saying i switched to a ported box. basically what you see in the picture aren't really up to date on how it is now

    But in reality that's car is mine, those speakers are mine, this thread i posted ....... you guessed it, MINE. only thing that is not mines is your 2 cents which you can keep sir. i don't claim to be a know it all or a guru,i'm still learning new things as i go, but you really don't have to be jerk
