I did a search, and only found this mentioned to be a problem on the Gen II --- didn't see anything for the Gen III.

I just did my fourth fuel up on my Prius. The first two went without a hitch. The last two --- the pump kept clicking off every 1/4-1/2 gallon of pumping. It was quite frustrating really. I have used the same gas station on all 4 fill ups .. and the same pump on two of them. One time the pump did it ... the other time it didn't.

I tried just about every combination of pump insertion depth, pump to tank angle, standing in various positions (one leg, both legs, one hand above the head, pumping while doing a jig, the "under the leg" pump) -- but nothing seemed to help.

First : Is this a common problem on the Gen III? My 4Runner did it once in a blue moon, but the Prius done it 50% of the time (yes ... I know my sample size is too small :) ).

Second : If this is a common problem, is there a magic trick to make it stop so that I don't have to run the risk of being arrested for all of the expletives I scream while pumping gas? Or, should I just carry duct tape with me to cover my mouth when I am pumping? :D

Not a common problem with the Gen3. Mine, for example, almost never clicks off until it is nearly full.

If I had the problem you describe I would try another gas station. Some pumps are over sensitive and don't work well with some cars.

If you try a couple of other stations and still have the problem take your car to the dealer and let them fix it. I did have a company car once that was that way and they replaced the entire filler neck on the tank which fixed it. I think it was damaged when someone tried to siphon gas out out the tank.

That actually just happened to me last night when I filled up in prep for Irene. I have a Gen III but this is the first time it has happened.

It is not your cars. There are certain gas stations I refuse to go to here in Jacksonville because they have cruddy refill nozzles on the pumps. Even at the Hess I fill up at there are certain pumps I avoid because the nozzles will shut off (some worse than others). Reason I know it is not the car is because I can take my 04' Trailblazer to the same pump, and get the same exact result. Except it takes twice as long to fill up the Trailblazer as the Prius. My advice is to try a different pump next time, or a different gas station altogether.

Nozzles wear out and must routinely be replaced. Some gas stations are quicker to do that than others. As already suggestion if it ever happens again... stop... pay... then finish at the next pump available. Complaining is valid at that point too. You shouldn't have to deal with that.

In Oregon and New Jersey you are strictly forbidden to pump gas into your car.

You have no choice when you get gas, if the pumps shuts off, I
believe in Oregon you can not top off, so when the pumps shuts off
the gas attendant is mandated to remove the nozzle and place it back in the pump holder. Even if the pump shuts off with maybe 5 gallons pumped and it would take aleast 3-4 gallons more.

I love Oregon but this law makes no sense to me and perhaps millions of other people....

When I do go to Washington State I fillup to the top of the neck.

If you live in Oregon or Joisey you may not have the option to self-pump, but you do have the option of avoiding stations that have worn or improperly maintained nozzles.
Tell the service attendant. Drive away. Pick another service station. Repeat as necessary.

Yeah, it's probably a pain in the neck---pun unintended however (comma!) that's the beauty of State's Rights.

As others have stated.....this isn't common for G3's. Mine never exhibits this behavior.
    Good Luck!

If the pump is fine, it still could be the car. There were at least 2 TSBs on the Nissan 350Z over difficulty fueling.

Here's one and a partial of another:

Mine does it a lot. After it happens I just hold the nozzle a little away from the hole and pump the gas in slow till it tops off. Doesn't bother me.

Due to a long trip, I had to fuel up three times at different pumps -- and I didn't experience the problem at any of them. It must just be the station that I am using in town. They always have the cheapest gas ... and, its a name brand station... so, I love going there. But, I guess I figured out how they end up keeping their gas so cheap --- they don't maintain the pumps properly.

I don't have that problem (yet) with my Gen III, but I did with the Gen II. It just started after ~1.5 years of ownership. But I found if I barely put the nozzle into the filler neck and didn't pump at full speed, it would pump okay. That sorta negates the purpose of the shutoff, but I just had to do that for it to pump correctly. Once I found the "sweet spot" so to speak, I never had that problem again.

i tend to not have this problem in los angeles. if i do, i change pumps.

it's a little bit more common in northern california.

i've been around the country several times. usually driving. as i leave california, i run into pumps clicking off, overfills, and other problems due to the people being too lazy (lack of interest into the mechanical details of their product)

it seems people don't understand what a career in something is anymore... you take care of every aspect as well as you can to make yourself the best.. not just an hourly...

Did you have any luck resolving this situation?

I have a 2012 Prius III that has the same problem. The dealer said it has something to do with a pressure sensitive bladder in the gas tank, and claims this is something I have to live with. But this is severe and maddening and seems to actually be somewhat rarer than he indicated.

A bad Evap vent solenoid can cause this problem.
It will usually trigger a check engine light in addition to the fill problem.

the 2012 does not have a bladder, find a competent dealer. did you see the post that pointed to a bad gas pump problem and to try a different gas station?

That happened to me once on a road trip through Oregon. I turned in with an empty tank and the attendant pumped maybe 2 gallons and sent me on my merry way without a word. I had already gotten on the highway before I noticed the tank was a quarter full and had to stop for gas again 2 hours later.

^ That's a strong motivation for the station owner to keep the auto shut-offs in good working order.

Did you have any luck resolving your issue? I'm having the same problem with a 2012 Prius 3. The dealer said I just have to live with it and that it has to do with a bladder in the gas tank that minimizes fumes, but I have to think that min situation is worse than most. It shuts of continuously everytime I fill up and every station. The only solutions is hold onto the nozzle and manually reduce the flow to a trickle

The Prius definitely seemed to do this more than any other vehicle I had ... but, it does seem to have a lot to do with the shutoff sensor on the gas pump itself. I starting filling more often at a different station, and I didn't experience the problem at much. I actually ended up just getting rid of my Prius back in Feb anyhow. I lost all interest in driving it after I ended up with the bad has mileage bug after the dealer software update.

That dealer's confusing second gen with third gen. There's no bladder in the third gen tank.

I've had no shut off problems, it behaves like any other car I've filled up. I do shut off at the first click. Bad luck with pumps? Kind of improbable though. Maybe something per post #14??
