I think the same. There are plenty of times when I see blacked out tail lights almost causing accidents. Especially in direct sun, u can barely see the brake lights, if at all... a little smoke isn't too bad.

the orange microimage priC looks so different now...different taillights, exhaust, no tow cable, rims and a bodykit. it's so damn cool, doesn't even look like a priusC anymore. they should post pics of it. :D

If you look carefully at the full photo above, you can see through the smoke. If you can see through, you will see the stop lights when brakes are applied. It also appears to me that the top stop light on the spoiler is still clear. If you can't see that one, you shouldn't be driving. The turn signals are harder to see than the stop lights, it is true, and a brighter bulb may be in order. You don't generally turn on the lights until dark, and in the dark, all the rear lights are plenty visible.

And yes, they look MUCH better than the garish, comedic altezzas that we are subjected to with the OEM unaltered.

stop lights.jpg Here are a few pictures in daylight. It is regrettably cloudy, but I don't have the messianic powers of our buddy Barry to make the sun shine and the seas fall. :)

One is taken with a flash to demonstrate that the reflectors work as well.

Yep, those brake lights are pretty dim, even for a cloudy day. In direct sunlight, it's even worse. And yours aren't even completely blacked out, those guys are the worse! Gotta avoid them at all cost.

    I like it!
It gives the local police reasons to pull over people for equipment rather than hassle me for driving 10 over.... :)
It also provides something of a counter-balance to the Prius stodginess rep.
    Win-Win. :D

Actually the OP's smoke isn't all that ridiculous looking, and it's probably not much less visible than OEM - but you're still attenuating the reflectors and the brake lights, and it's still illegal.
One of the reasons that my beloved government makes ALL mods like this illegal (besides the obvious) is that somebody is always going to go one shade darker.
Some LEOs that I've talked to actually like it when there is a clear cut reason to pull people over, and you could almost argue that it gives them a good infraction to club down to from the 15-over that they could have given you if you cooperate and just let them check out the inside of your car and run your insurance, registration, tag, etc.
Believe it or not, most cops loathe doing traffic, except for school zones and construction areas where there is a clear cut safety component and they can make their numbers AND give the motorist a break.

    ...another Win-Win.

the eternal struggle between risk vs cool factor.
:D My car isn't even 100 percent street legal with tinted front windows but black out taillights in a big city are a bit too much of a hazard for me. So many cops always looking to pull people over, and if someone rear ends you they have grounds to contest it being their fault. Particularly if you're WAY smoked out. If I lived in a more open area I'd totally go for it though. Looks too damn cool

If you get pulled over, all you have to do is pretend you don't speak English. No one is allowed to mess with
Anyone in the habit of driving ten or fifteen miles an hour over the limit, is probably more a menace than I. Officers in my area tend to give warnings rather than tickets for these types of things, with an admonition to 'get it fixed.' It is most certainly not probable cause for a search. If they insist on a ticket, so be it.

In my opinion the lighting is sufficient to give fair warning of all my intent.
