    The demographic bias should be looked at closely. The voting age being lowered to 16 for this election was a SNP tactic. It was designed to take advantage of the difference in emotion of young idealists vs. the practical considerations evaluated by family members with jobs and pensions. Why else lower the voting age to (mostly) those not holding any jobs?

    Independence certainly can result in an advantage for Scotland with good leadership. Jumping into financial isolation with clueless leadership can plunge every Scottish citizen into economic chaos. That might have been the real voting considerations. Keep in mind the SNP got control of the Scottish government with a majority vote but the SNP did not get independence with a majority vote. The issue might be more with the SNP instead of the Scottish public. If what the SNP was promising sounded too good to be true....how would you vote with your economic future on the line?

    I have long thought that Dixie should be expelled by the USA and offered to Mexico. That might strike them by a 'clue by four.'

    Mexico would be foolish to agree.

    However, I entirely agree with your sentiment

    Which comprise of?

    But my American history is poor but I'm sure that these southern states still have some craving for independence?

    This is The South - fringe states (which were not part of the Confederacy) are cross-hatched. "Deep South" is deep red - definitely Dixie.

    I've thought Texas splitting was a dumb idea, so it influenced me to think Scotland splitting was a bad idea, even if there are a lot of differences in that situation.

    The South has always been more traditional and more conservative than the rest of the nation. It's why the Democrats had a monopoly after the Civil War (except when whites were disenfranchised during Reconstruction.) However, when FDR became President, the Democrats suddenly became the civil right party as well as the more conservative one, yet The "Solid South" had a block of conservative Democrats that supported national candidates for several more decades. Between Eisenhower in the 1950, and Reagan in 1980, whites gradually shifted to the GOP. Right now, every state-wide office in Texas is held by a Republican....in 1975, the Democrats had a monopoly.

    If I understand devolution correctly, The South would NEVER tolerate having their local affairs run from Washington without state legislators - they would have had a 2nd Civil War. Americans have become more distrustful of a central government since the 1960's esp. The South.

    Got to mention lot's of rednecks there, and typically many of them are of Scottish and Scot-Irish (Ulster) ancestry. Famous example: Ross Perot - you catch me? :D

    The southern states in the US. I think it approximates the states that formed the side of the US civil war that wanted slavery.

    As a gross stereotype of the descendants think 'white' and 'insular', and at least 3 more of: obese, racist, religious, and ignorant.

    I think we're aware of the stereotype;

    But I'm never a fan of stereotypes as the south of the UK think all people in the North are clog wearing, whippet racing, ruddy faced fools;

    When the truth is that we are just bloody fantastic. It's the southerners who wear strange garments;

    Ah, isn't human kind strange and bizarre.

    Getting rid of the South would be a mistake. It represents over 30% of U.S. economic power.
    That's not even close to accurate..... if it were the new 1790s government would have been an oligarchy with businessmen in charge (and no Bill of Rights to protect the individuals from the oligarchs). Also the U.S. sent Ambassador Benjamin Franklin to Parliament, and they responded by laughing at him as a "backwards colonial". Obviously no reconciliation was possible when the British legislators were so prejudiced against their own countrymen.

    It is sad when somebody (think originally "The Economist") compare GDP of one state to antother country, in that case Texas to Russia. Comparison is made in US dollars, printed in USA. Do it in rubles and see the difference...Texas does not have any rubles :) poor state. Saw the map where another state in the middle of US was compared to New Zealand. Come on guys, give me a break!

    How about comparison of the intellectual power contributed to the overall success of that melting pot, called USA by other nations/nationalities?
    To be fair to each and every country and nationality in the world - how about drawing a map of US where nationalities of people (or nationality of their parents who brought them into US) - those who earned all sorts of awards in sport, science and culture, invented all sorts of things (e.g. Sikorsky helicopter made by Russian Mr. Sikorsky is one of the millions examples. Who would have a clue that "Seahawk" has Russain roots?).

    Any other country and immigrants from those can only and still do enreach US intellectually as they do enrich New Zealand. Good for you good for us.

    P.S. Remember "Big Fat Greek Wedding" movie, quote: "Tell me any English word and I will prove it has Greek roots" :)

    Well said.

    The US has been poaching the world's smarts for a couple centuries now, although there are signs that it is coming to an end.

    What's the point of this discussion? Every place ranks lower or higher than somewhere else. Are we that competitive?

    A friend of mine was contemplating a move from Alberta to Montana, but after she looked up the average income, she called it off. Less than half.
