I just test drove a 2012 Prius v today and heard a whiney noise, especially when braking. Sounded like a siren. 33,000 miles. Does the engine really sound like that?

The hybrid system does. Its the sound of 2 large motor/generator units and a couple pretty large planetary gears. The "engine" as it were isn't running at all when you're braking below 45mph.
If you're considering your 1st Prius, I recommend some reading up on the hybrid system.

The hybrid system makes that distinctive whine any time you apply the brakes. I find it reassuring: charging, charging. ;)

It's not the Noisemaker sound is it, to warn pedestrians ?
It's not fitted over here in the UK, is it fitted in the US ?

Proximity Alert System. No, its not that. That sounds a little like a bad bearing, sort of a growl, and is only emitted under 15 MPH or so.
