Molly, I think you will be ok on the major paved roads, but drive the gravel construction zone areas very carefully. In particular, from Kluane Lake, Yukon, to the Alaskan border is almost continuous construction zones (150 km!), so that will slow you down. But gas in Canada is $6-$8 per gallon so you will appreciate the high mpg of your Prius! The major towns are cheaper than the isolated stations in the boondocks , so try to fill up in cities as much as you can, but NEVER let your fuel get too low as it is completely deserted in some places and not patrolled by police or anything. Your mileage may suffer in the long cold season (check with Spider-Man ) but will still be much better than other vehicles.
How are the tires on your Prius? Do you have a full-sized spare or donut? Ok with using the jack and changing a tire? Not trying to insult you, but I realized when I had to beak loose the lug nuts when my tire blew near the Alaska-Yukon border last week, that it required more force than my DW could exert. Oh, you might want to take with or purchase at Canadian Tire a hand ax, as I had to use that to pound the rim loose from its backing plate after I removed the lug nuts--you might be able to kick it loose, but I preferred to use the blunt end of the ax as a hammer--ax also works for chopping firewood should you be inclined to camp along the way!
Have fun and good luck on the new job!
(Just realized I sound in this post like a worried grandfather, but the truth is I AM a worried grandfather!)

I appreciate all the advice I can get! I had the prius for years in Michigan, so I'm familiar with how it handles in winter weather. I think anchorage gets quite a bit more snow so I may end up getting something with more clearance but I wanted to get up there first. I can change a tire though I'd prefer not to. The axe is a good idea. I'm not traveling solo but my travel buddy is probably no handier than I am:) I nearly traded the beloved prius in on a rav4 but was just so unexcited about driving a non prius. Thanks again!

Update, the trusty prius made it to anchorage without any problems. Added air to the tires a few times but that was it. I will say Robert you were correct about that stretch through the Yukon at kluane lake. Pretty rough. Now to consider the merits of studded tires! Hope all your travels are going well.

Thanks for info as I really do worry about some people.
Um, you might consider touching base with Spider-Man as he has owned his Prius in Anchorage about 3 years now I think, so would know about dealer and non-dealer ways to maintain your Prius(awfully nice guy, too.).
Good luck on your new life up there--it does seem to be a land with opportunities for those willing to work hard.
