I'm using a Kit from " The retrofit source" since my last 3 Prii in in the last 9 years.
Never a problem and their components are first quality.

I just purchased a kit from the retrofit source with OEM ballst and standalone canbus but ran into problems. It wouldn't fire consistently and reliably. It keeps going on and off randomly after several seconds or immediately within a second. My right side have better luck. I switched the canbus and the result is the same. I thought my left side ballst is no good, but the problem is that ballst doesn't even stay on consistently. From you guys experience should I have just gone with regular harnesses?

I had and still using the Retrofit Source kits and alway used the relay kit for the ballast triggering, never attempted the CAN buss route to avoid problems like yours. My 2 cents...

I didn't user any CAN Bus module on my 2010. My understanding is the Prius doesn't use CAN Bus for the headlights.

Yeah. That's what I'm going to try next. The harness requires direct power source from battery from the looks of it. I've seen someone giving out advice on where to tap into, but can't find it anymore. Anyone has a link?

Use one of the two open terminals in the engine fuse box. They are the ones with the two heavier gauge red wires in this picture:

They are always hot, so treat it like the positive terminal on your battery.

Thank you xliderider. It looks like you just use common connector to plug it in. I'll definitely go this route. Thanks again for your help!

Yes, typical 0.25 inch push on crimp type connector. Make sure you insulate it with heat shrink or something.

Only to the extent that damage caused by the HID kit will not be repaired under warranty.

You said OEM ballast, I understood that Prius don't HID as standard option.
What brand is the OEM ballast.
I just installed moromoto 55w with 500ok and with relay. Did I miss the option of OEM ballasts ?

I always suggest installing a relay harness on any car not originally equipped with HIDs.

Installing HIDs will not void ur warranty unless it's found to be the root cause of the failure.

I agree, especially if one was ordered, or is available. Definitely a better source of power directly from the fuse box, and doesn't need to go through the headlight circuit.

May I ask where did you hook up the relay ground wire?

Is this good enough? Any damage if it gets wet?

OEM ballast are from Denso, which retrofit source store sells. I ended up getting a high capacity relay and it works awesome with their 4,300k bulbs. You are right, it's not Toyota OEM.

I had my where the "E" bolt is, figure it looks like it is grounding something else, might as well tap to it. Th only caution I guess on yours is that the bolt and the panel is painted?
