My PiP - After One Year (Stats)

    The claim was made that they operated at redline. A video was provided clearly showing that wasn't the case. In fact, it showed the operation wasn't all that different from the standard Gen3. There's just more electricity available.

    Think about all the power-carriers (aka gears) in the 6-speed automatic transmissions now being sold. What is their maintenance schedule? What about the 9-speed Chrysler will be rolling out this fall?

    Sure. Why not? It can still be plugged in anywhere but looking at where it can go for me sure. Heck it even has a 7 passenger option.

    Most (all?) Car Manufacturers have a maintenance schedule for changing the ATF in any automatic transmission.

    My Gen3 did not have that in the book.
    What does the PiP say about this maintenance? Are ATF changes ever discussed for PiP?
    Just trying to help you guys......

    My Gen3 would do maybe 47 mph in EV mode, the PiP can do 62 mph. Correct?
    What is happening in that box O'gears to allow this increase?



    As for "the Tesla as your only car" question, I personally need a car that I can go anywhere, at anytime. On the 'Supercharger Maps' those are One-Way circles of range.

    My understanding is it's more to do with the kW/hp available from the battery than the gears.

    Just a nit: the Prius (Plug-in, or otherwise) does not a transmission. There is nothing like a torque converter or clutches engaging and disengaging gears. Obviously, the power split device has to have some sort of lubrication, but I don't know if this is anything like automatic transmission fluid. I am not a mechanic, but I suspect that the lubrication would be more akin to that in a manual gearbox.

    I read somewhere on here that the transmission has a small pump to splash lubricant around, but that's about it.

    If you want a primer on the transaxle ATF change subject : ATF fluid changes ARE Required. | PriusChat

    There are no friction clutches or torque converters, just gears and bearings in a box with two motor/generators.
    And the gears are always engaged, no shifting.

    Where do you get $0.05/kWh? The lowest PG&E E-1, E-6, or EV are about $0.10/kWh or higher. Also, if you have a bill that goes to Tier 3 you must consider that some of those Tier 3 kWh are there because they were "pushed" from a lower tier due to the fact you used more baseline kWh.

    I have the EA9 TOU for Low Emission Vehicle rate, which is no longer offered. Looking at my most recent bill, my Tier 1 rates are $0.05 Off Peak, $0.11 Part Peak, $0.33 Peak.

    Oh yes, I tried that for a while but changed to E-6. In any case when your off-peak kWh adds to the total and you have some in Tier 3, then the off-peak kWh "pushes" up the total so more kWh fall into Tier 3 hence the effective cost for the off-peak costs more. It is a complicated mess :(

    If you can stay in Tier 1 with solar things are much better :)

    If pricing is really done that way, it is a scam.

    It is no wonder that EV owners in CA embrace PV. I'm surprised it is only reported at ~ 40% rather than 100%

    The new EV rate has no tiers so what you use and when you use it is what you get.

    Peak - Part Peak - Off Peak
    Summer Usage $0.39274 $0.20933 $0.09709
    Winter Usage $0.26545 $0.15989 $0.09973

    However the time of use schedule is not favorable for us folks in the hot central valley using lots of A/C in the summer and considering the relative modest kWh usage of the Prius. For an all EV car with high kWh usage the EV rate is probably a good deal.

    PG&E has a "what-if" web page takes takes your individual usage history, as reported by your SmartMeter, and computes what your bill would have been with various rate plans. I ran mine with the new non-tiered EV plan, and it was significantly higher than what I am paying now. So I will stay with the old rate plan until they force me off of it, which they promised they would do at some point. :( I suspect that people whose cars have much larger batteries come off a lot better on the new rate plan.

    The CA utilities that are NOT "regulated" by CPUC charge reasonable rates (Public Benefit Utilities). The IOU's (Investor Owned Utilities) have a GUARANTEED return on capital (which, of course, they account) and charge some of the highest rates in the country.
