well I saw one other thread on this topic but no resolution. I replaced the hybrid battery like the codes told me too on my 2003 prius and it now drives great but as soon as it start it shows a problem and the red triangle stays on. No check engine light, no codes, no driving issues just a red triangle.

Hoping someone has knowledge of this or how to diagnose a red triangle when there are no codes.

Do you have a code scanner that will turn off all DTC's?

You need a Prius-aware, OBD scanner. There are Prius-specific OID codes.

I have code reader that is about 8 years old. reads and erases codes like it always has. Are you telling me there are new models of code readers that are prius specific or just that mine is outdated? Is there something still to read with just a red triangle that a regular code reader doesn't pick up?

Most scanners will not read the Prius specific codes. Emissions related codes are standard by international agreement so generally engine codes are all the same from car to car. There is no such agreement on manufacturers specific codes, transmission, airbags, ABS, traction control, and others.
The best and cheap system is the Mini VCI with Techstream software using an old preferably Vista/ XP laptop. This can read all Prius codes, and sub codes, and is capable of all the service tasks such as zero point calibration, brake bleeding, programming to key fobs, ect.
Costs about $25 plus a laptop. It will work on all Toyota and Lexus cars.

SJR, have you tried the cave-man method, remove a terminal from the 12v battery for a minute to clear the code...you may lose stored dtc codes, but if the beloved triangle doesn't come back there wasn't a problem to start with....I did take Wilson and Britprius' advice above and got the $25 scanner, too cheap to pass up.

Yes fail to mention that I have disconnected 12v battery many times for up to 10 min and as soon as I start car it comes back.

There are no magical code readers that can eliminate problem codes that are existing. No matter how many times they are erased, they'll come back if the problem is not fixed/addressed.

That has been the frustration, there is no check engine light and no code to read. I have ordered the mini vci maybe that will tell me why the red triangle keeps coming on since I have no codes to read right now when its on.

After I reworked my 2nd Prius' battery I installed it and before I tightened it down with one bolt and then started the car. I figured that I'd like to just make sure everything worked before went to the bother of reinstalling every bolt. As the car started the red triangle come on and I was shocked.

Then I remembered that I'd not not reinserted the safety plug. After shutting of the engine and reinserting the safety plug I restarted the engine. The triangle was still illuminated.... no cods. So, I used my Scangauge II to turn off all

Since you had a ScanGauge II, did you try programming it with the XGAUGE data to read the HV and battery ECU trouble codes and inf codes? I'm betting that if you had, you'd have seen at least one of: P3004(inf 131) for the service plug out, P3140(inf 350) for the interlock circuit open.

Generally, if you've got warning lights on, it's because you've got codes. If you make sure you have a code reader capable of reading the codes in a Prius, you'll know more about what's going on than if you don't.

Nope, I'd already used my Denso Toyota specific Hand Held Scanner to do the diags. I used the Scanguage for fun... and to see what it would do.

Close TS, edit the file IT3System.ini as below, then open TS again:

open My Computer, C: Program files\Toyota Diagnostics \Techstream\Env

open IT3System.ini file and scroll down to

    AVAILABLE FUNCTION SETTING

    Switch TISFunction=1 to TISFunction=0

Perhaps you might include some of the error messages and a few screen shots?

Use "print screen" and "paint" to make jpegs.
