A good friend is selling a 2001 Prius and I'm considering it. He says it's in excellent condition, has dealer service records, 250K miles (hybrid battery was replaced at 180K). I don't actually need to replace my 93 Camry :) but it'd be nice to spend less for gas. Also, I really hate shopping for cars and this would be a great opportunity to upgrade.

What issues should I be aware of with the 2001? (How come there's no Gen 1 forum here -- too low-ball??) Is this a reasonable choice if I *don't* intend to repair it myself? I've had Toyotas for years and they tend to last a loooooooooong time. Any issues with Prius vs. fossil-fuel Toyotas I should know about?

welcome to priuschat! there is a thread you can search for, 'who should buy a gen I prius, and who shouldn't.' i don't know where you fall, but i can say that the prius is one of the most reliable cars on the road. however, at that mileage, i'm sure you're aware that anything can go wrong, and there are a few extra expensive parts on a hybrid that gassers don't have. even your replacement battery 'could' fail at any time and cost you a few thousand. all the best with your decision!(y)
