    Hi everybody.
I own a 2007 Prius last Friday I was driving on the freeway when all of sudden the car died on me without any warning lights. There was a bad burning smell which later I realize it was from the inverter coolant pump. I was luckily able to mange to pull on side. Towing was another pain because the car wont turn (start) or acc so you cant shift to neutral and the front wheels were locked.
Took it to Toyota they refused to cover any work because inverter pump was replaced by the previous owner about 2 years ago. between that there is hardly 20k on it. when I asked them it should not fail in 20 miles they wont give straight answer. instead they said we will charge 1100 for diagnostic and if it is the pump its not covered under warranty. I honestly cant afford that much money. so I brought the car back.
Now the car wont start. I checked the main fuse on axillary battery and its working fine. The interior lights are turning on, alarm and key fob works, power locks working. but it wont start.
I was reading the forum they were talking about the same issue. same symptoms but they got fixed by Toyota.
They said there is a fuse that will be tripped by the coolant pump its 15A AM2 fuse. I don't know where is that fuse. I can have the pump replaced but need to know how to tun on the car.
A local mechanic came to check and he said that main relay showing current only on battery side but not towards inlet (going to engine or car).
If anyone knows about which fuse to check and also is it safe to replace the pump
sorry for the long message tried to give info as much possible.

    Thank you

An engine compartment fuse box diagram should be in your owner's manual, and the fuse box cover should have a description of the primary circuit for each fuse and relay. Look for "Inverter Coolant Pump" or something similar.

Thank you, for your reply but I don't remember seeing ICP fuse in that list. I will go check back to make sure it is possible I may have missed it. I certainly appreciate the reply.

There is a recall on the pump. You mentioned the previous owner changed it, changed it himself or at the dealer? In CA, there should be a warranty on that part, should be up to 150k miles.

Have you checked the 12v battery to make sure it's not drained?

The previous owner had it done at Toyota.
if I buy the part and have local mechanic do it will Toyota reimburse the cost of the part?

the 12V battery is checked and its performing perfect.
Jump start wont do work either

does the car have more than 150k miles? If not, I don't see why Toyota wouldn't cover it at the dealership

but I had a salvaged title before and the Toyota replaced the battery.
I asked them how was it replaced before on a salvaged title , they said they did it somehow but now they can not do it.
Beside on the pump they kept saying its no more covered under the recall because it is replaced once

There are no warranties on a salvage title car, but the safety recall should still be covered. You can try and call Toyota HQ and tell them the replaced recalled pump has failed after 20k miles and you were stranded on the freeway. See what they are willing to do to address the issue. Toyota HQ is in Torrance CA.

I found the AM2 fuse and when I replaced the fuse with working fuse the wiper started rolling so that is good indication. I did not leave the fuse for longer because I was afraid it will burn the fuse.
So at this time I am confident it was the Pump caused the fuse to trip. Please advise me if otherwise.

So I am going to buy the pump from Toyota (unless if somebody has suggestion to buy from somewhere else).
I also contacted Toyota headquarters (email) and I don't know when will I get any reply from them.
Can someone send me step by step instructions replacing the pump. also with an option to drain or without draining the fluid. Moreover how to tall how much fluid to fill assuming I did not drain the previous (obviously I don't know how much was in there).

    Thanks for all the help

Reset the car. Disconnect the negative for a few second. Once it starts, make sure the pump is operating

Not that i am doubting you rather i want to make sure that i explained everything properly.
So currently the car is not starting and its showing warning on MFD with a car icon. Its not going to ready mode.

My question (again that is for my understanding). If reset we are going to lose all the codes then we would never know what was the code. I do have scanner now Odbii and also got the toyota software on my laptop to run diagnostic. My laptop is getting charge to take it to garage.

What is you advice in the ligh of above info.

    Thanks again

The fault codes will come back if you reset the car. Then you'll get a true reading of what is wrong. Right now, those codes are probably old from before the fix

Per your instructions i have removed the positive terminal of battery and left for few minutes. Put it back together and then try starting it gaian but to my disappointment all the warning lights are still lit up.
When the pump was replacted and after fuse was replaced i Saw the water is circulating.
The HV battery is still shwoing blue bars. When i was running my tech smart diagnostic i was cocerned its going to drain hv battery. The tech smart diagnostic is not showing any trouble code.

The car is not going to ready mode. The big red triangle is still lit up with all other lights such as break, abs, vsc, airbag, and more.

What is the next step please advise.

    Thank you,

No i did not but before doing the pump i did because i was looking for which fuse is bad. I was suspecting it was may be the main relay for this reason i did pull the orange plug. But i have not done this after replacing the pump.

Please tell me in sequence what needs to be done 12v battery positive remove, and orange?

Go back to that switch on the hv battery, you need to lock it in place. When you first put it back, you put in the switch and pivot up 90 degrees. After that you have to push downward on the switch to lock it in place. Once you lock it in place, your car should start.
