Toyota Recalls 247,000 Cars as Feds Urge Air Bag Fixes

My Dad's 2003 NUMMI Toyota Corolla was recalled earlier for the driver's side air bag.

Now, it's recalled again for the passenger side air bag.

The car is registered in Georgia.

States in the mid-West and the North, beware. Solely due to costs and politics, they are NOT a part of the recall.

They are claiming it is due to the higher absolute humidity in the south.

What happens when you relocate a car from the north to the humid south? They would know you moved and get you a recall?

    Doesn't matter where you are.

If the actuator explodes and you are hit by shrapnel (named after Henry), you will be injured or dead.

    You will still be DEAD.

Maybe it's safer to just remove the airbags eh?

What if you live in a non humid area that is not subject to the recall. Are you in danger when you go on a trip in a humid area?

The corrosion take a long time to occur. Humidity is a PITA for any design. I don't care since we are an arid desert.

There's no excuse for corrosion in a vehicle, period. I don't care what it is, it can be designed to be non-corrosive.

We used to buy a new exhaust system every few years. Now the cost of a stainless steel exhaust system pays for itself many times over. Newer Fords are using aluminum (aluminium for the Brits) which wouldn't be a bad idea for all cars. There's a cathodic protection device (similar principle to what's used on underground tanks) which can be installed in a vehicle to prevent rusting. I think corrosion is part of a planned-obsolescence plan.

We just got the "Recall Campaign No. 14V-428 Front Passenger Air Bag" notice for our 2005 325xi.
I called BMW to schedule the appointment and was told the part (Front Passenger Air Bag) is on national back-order and is "expected" to be available in a month or so.

Our 2003 Honda CRV is on the Takata recall list here (Consumer Advisory: Vehicle Owners with Defective Airbags Urged to Take Immediate Action | National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)) but when I log into the Honda site and use my VIN- the only airbag recall notice is from May 2011 for an inspection if you've ever had the original driver side airbag module replaced. Is it possible the Takata passenger side airbag recall hasn't been posted by Honda yet?

really amazing how poorly this is being done, considering recent history. even one more injury is one too many.

It is absolutely possible, and you are correct.

The Toyota dealers have been told, if anyone calls, to avoid use of the front passenger seat, or they will disconnect the front passenger airbag, until the replacement part is available.

I was just there at my dealership and just talked to the Service General manager.

I guess that means the Prius and Volt are both 4 seaters now!

Let's all avoid an accident. That avoids the problem and puts us in control right?

If it was this easy, we would NOT need seat belts, air bags or any other type of safety device.

There ARE accidents that you CANNOT avoid.

but we could greatly decrease them if we collectively chose to. and you can greatly decrease the amount you're involved in through slow, careful driving. i haven't had an accident in 40 years, and i attribute it to low speed and awareness at all times. constant vigilance!
