How to Program a New Key Fob for Full SKS Functionality

    You can have it cut at nearly any key shop. Some will not do it (like Lowe's) but, I've had good luck at Wal-Mart (they have done it twice for free).

    Another option (and its one I like) is to buy an old Toyota key (like for a 1994 Camry, get the key without a chip in it, an old school key, whatever you do, don't let them sell you a key with the chip in it for this) and have it cut to match your key. That way you will have a full size key to open your doors with. I have done this for all the Gen II Prius I've owned.

    Here are a couple photos to help

    Buy a key blank like this and have it cut to match your Prius' mechanical key.

    Here's a key blank from your Prius. If you look, there is no difference in the two blanks except one is shorter.

    I really like this option because you have a "full" sized key if you ever need it. :)

    Took me less than 10 minutes (2 passes, see note below) and my new SKS remote is set. It was bought new from Camelback Toyota (free shipping with other stuff) for$103. No tax.

    Note 1
    9c: Within three seconds, press the lock key on the NEW fob. If successful the lock/unlock will cycle once indicating success (It may take a while for the lock/unlock cycle. I've seen it happen just as I was ready to say, "well, it didn't work". If you wait for a long time and get no cycle at all, complete step 10. and test to see if the SKS functions of your new fob work. If they do, pls report that on this thread).
    1st pass, I held the button down for less than 10 sec. then let go, thinking I missed something.
    2nd pass, I pressed the lock button for close to 30-40 sec. before the doors locked.

    Note 2
    There are two keys/remotes that will work with the SKS system. One will be cheaper by about $15.
    OEM Fob Part # for smart access is 89994-47061 (around $105)
    OEM Fob Part # for smart access 89904-47011 (around $120)
    They both look the same.

    I got my 1st 2012 Prius V today but it came with just 1 key. Can somebody please tell me if this method works for 2012 Prius V five.

    just reporting that I successfully programmed a new fob with SKS. I pressed the lock button in step 9c twice and it worked. It's possible it would have worked with just one press, but the lock/unlock cycle wasn't immediate, so I pressed it again. Whatever the case, full SKS functionality. I have a 2006.

    Ok, it looks like we just may have all the bases covered here as I'm starting to get consistent reports of full functionality with virtually no issues on the procedure. I want to tell you all how much I appreciate the help I've received from perfect strangers to get this to where it is today. That is a victory for our community. Pat yourself on the back. :)

    Hi. I just successfully programmed a new SKS fob following your excellent instructions. In Procedure B step 9c, I did not get a lock/unlock cycle, so skipped to step 10 as you suggested, and found that the fob was in fact fully programmed.

    btw this was on a 2008 base model.

    There is a post about the gen III fobs. You will need to know your FCC# on the FOB and get a mini-VCI or find someone local who has one.

    Call me a pessimist but when I find things like this on the internet I assume that it won't really work......BUT to my great surprise, it worked! I read through the instructions twice, did a practice run then made my first attempt. I had my new chrome logo key fob working in less than 2 minutes! Instead of paying $350 for the dealer (quote i received yesterday in Phoenix, Az) to supply the key and activate it, I did it for a grand total of $118. Bought the new fob on Amazon from a Toyota dealer in South Carolina, even came with a fresh battery in it. Now I just need AAA to send someone out to cut the little key. I could not be happier, thank you so much for the hard work on this post! Cheers

    Funny thing is - when the chicken dance / process 1st got posted (over 7 years ago on PC - primarily non-sks: Finally! How to program a non-SKS key/fob. Detailed! | PriusChat ) several of our members literally pooh pooh'ed the poor member to death. Seems they simply stumbled on it by luck (tho many suspected a Toyota insider helped) ... and now, here we are. Good to see that many of the original nay sayer's went easier on members, as this thread progressed over the last 1/2 year.

    Yes. It finally worked. i think. But my car now will not start. does not do anything when I put key in old/new fob and press power button.
