I am wanting to downsize from a large SUV. Nearly everyone I've spoken to about my plan is shocked and most of them seem to think the Prius v is the very definition of ugly. What's up with that? I think it looks pretty cool.

I buy my vehicles to be functional, so 'cool' never enters my mind.
The v makes a good cargo van for light cargo.

Lol. The v (lowercase v) isn't ugly, it's just utterly uninspiring to look at. Sort of like eating a salad sandwich - fills the gap and makes hippies happy, but carnivores are going to feel a touch unfulfilled.

But in America it should be alright. You guys are the land of ugly cars !! Thinks Pontiac, AMC, Pinto, PT Cruiser, and anything where some complete cretin decided use veneer instead of paint.

It'll look more and more cool to you each time you visit a gas station, which won't be very often.

Yes, all the power any adult could need, but not all the power a boy could want.

Oddly, the ugliest cars I have owned were Japanese. (1989 Toyota Corolla All-Trac wagon, 2001 Subaru Forester) But I buy cars for function, not looks, so I have owned many ugly cars.

The car is sized reasonably, dead bang reliable, and you gas bill will be cut by 2/3's. So what is not to like?

Ours is fantastic. Any comments about appearance sounds like nothing but jealousy.

They are afraid that you will start bragging about your mileage, reliability, low maintenance, etc. That makes them feel like they need to defend their choice of vehicle. They don't want to feel like they made an inferior decision. They value a different kind of appearance, and stress that point to reassure themselves that they made a good decision.

There's nothing wrong with that. You just need to realize that they have different priorities; not better, not worse, just different.

Some people can only say something negative about a new purchase. Who cares whether they like the way your vehicle looks. The only important person in this purchase is you. It's happened to me a lot lately. My new response is who cares what you like.

I "downsized" from a Chevy Equinox. Not much of a downsize since the interior space is nearly the same. There was a huge downsize in my fuel bills. I'm averaging about 20 mpg more with the Prius v, about a 40% increase. Also, the reliability has improved from horrendous to zero problems. Most SUVs are nothing special to look at anyway.

I forgot to mention that I felt the rear was the 'ugliest' part of the sedan but the v obviously doesn't have this problem.

I get 12MPG in my Kia Sedona, and 53MPG in the Pri HB
How people's opinions differ! IMO the back of the v (lowercase v) its ugliest part, and the back end of the HB is far better looking.
    Each to their own obviously.

After driving G/F's 2012 ''v'' some, I sold a MINT [ 25,000 miles ] Corvette convertible and got a 2014 HB. Her $16-$18 fill-ups vs my $40 [ premium ] in the Corvette let me see the light.... Friends flipped out upon finding out I had actually got out of a Corvette and bought a Prius, ''How could you sell that beautiful car and get a Prius''? The bottom line for me was I was sick of buying gasoline. I have absolutely no regrets about this change of vehicles, and 13,000 miles later in the Prius I have saved approx. $1,000 in fuel costs. Enough said......

You aren't the only one Lester. I sold a Porsche and bought a v.

OP, the exterior look of the v is one of my least favorite things about it. After 19k miles, if that is the biggest of my complaints, ... (I have 20 like's/love's and 27 dislike's/prefer-different's. The pluses win.)

$15 fillups let me buy an occasional $250M lottery ticket and exercise my "what if".

Thanks for the feedback, it's interesting to hear others' thoughts.

I went for it and love it! Bought a 2014 v five in Blizzard White. Looking forward to not spending $75-80 at the pump every few days!

As long as you like it that is all that matters. It belongs to you. What someone else thinks means nothing. You probably don't have any repairs and you get great gas mileage. The appearance looks nice to me. I don't see anything not to like.

My family and friends gave me a hard time for getting a Prius c (and later a liftback), but oddly enough they never complain about it when I let them borrow it, and they always act shocked when I tell them I only spend about $30-35 every two weeks to fill it up.

Of course, not my fault they bought an SUV for their commute to work.

Congrats! Hope you enjoy it as much as we have ours. The miles have pretty much stopped accumulating on our 2 large SUV's since getting our v in early June of this year. Has saved us a LOT of money on fuel bill already, even over the (premium fuel) WRX we replaced with it.
