    Your information is incorrect.
Just saying the C has room for 5 doesn't make it so.
The middle person in the back seat needs to be about 70 pounds or less; some dogs won't even fit well.

Neither one worthy of a "mid-sized" family car label.

Prius liftback is a midsize, offering more legroom in back.

And I suspect more "elbow" room for two rear passengers too.
A LOT of people have Volts as their main or only car.
Not too many do that with a C.

I did not say either cars are "mid-sized" family car.

I said Volt suits better to be a second car, especially with no spare tire.

I'd like to see the source of that claim about C.

And I am saying that you have it backwards; spare tire issue aside.

The source is a wild assed assumption.

I wasn't discussing the current Volt, but what the second gen needs to garner the most sales, and that is to become a better family car. Adding a fifth seat and increasing cabin space shouldn't be difficult. I suspect the space taken up by the rear battery tunnel would be enough to reach mid-size status. It has 90cu.ft. of cabin space. The Cruze, a mid-size, has 94, but 2 less of cargo space, and is at the cut off for mid-size. 94 is also what the Prius liftback has in cabin space. Getting the Volt 2 to Prius size shouldn't be a big hurdle.

My statement about the Prius c being for singles, young families, and second car also apply to the current Volt. The Volt has 3 more cubic feet of passenger space than the c. That is over 22 gallons of extra space. So while the Volt may not have a fifth seat, with the more realistic possibility of 4 people in either car, it will be more comfortable for those 4 people. Plus it has 1 cu.ft. more of cargo space. Which makes it better suited as a main family car replacement for those willing to downsize from a mid-size sedan or small crossover.

Where'd you stick the spare tire in your Prius phv, and didn't you take it on a 1000+ mile trip this summer? For most people, a spare tire isn't a need. Modern tires are more durable, all new cars have TPMS, and nearly everyone has a cell phone. The odds of needing to use the spare probably means it is dangerously underinflated by the time it is used for most people. Run flat tires are also an option for those that may need the assurance of a spare.

LEGROOM! That criteria cannot just be disregarded. The 1.9 inch difference in back is quite noticeable.

Increasing that to Prius size is one of the things we'll want to know find out about in January. Should we expect it?

When the new Volt shows up at the Chevy dealer, I'll take a ride and give it a look. :D

My "situation" is that I don't think the wording of your comment that the Volt would be better suited as a second car (implying that does not apply to the C) is an incomplete and misleading "situation".

    Everyone's "situation" is different.
Putting things or people into little classification "boxes" does not usually paint an accurate picture.

    Done.

On my recent road trip my right rear tire encountered a 4 inch long piece of rebar about 12 miles away from a major town in Wyoming just after sunset.

This was the first time in 30+ years of commuting and cross-country driving that I had a flat tire that couldn't have been or wasn't fixed with a tire goo inflation kit. If I had a real spare I would have been good to go or at least I could have had the tow truck driver put it on. If it was only a small temporary spare I could have at least limped to Salt Lake City to buy a new tire.

As thing turned out, I got a tow into the town and spent the night in a motel. The next morning I walked over to the tire store that my car had been left at overnight. They didn't have a new tire in my size and make and the old tire could not be repaired. After some discussion they found a used tire in my size and mounted that. I then drove to Salt Lake and bought my new tire there.

My impression is that few new compact or mid-sized hatchbacks or sedans come with full spares today and it seems like a waste to cart a full tire around for 30 years before needing it. A temporary spare would have saved me the cost of an overnight motel but I needed to stop soon anyway.

Unless I was routinely driving in rural back roads, I think I'm happy with a tire goo inflation kit but with an option to pick up a temporary spare kit from a dealer along with some designated storage space to hold the spare, tire iron, and jack.

Which is why I stated with a few of my reasons.

You, however made a blank statement.

BTW, PiP is our only car in the family of 4. There is no need for a second car. It is great for around town and my normal 8.5 miles commute. It was also great (60 MPG) for (1,000+ miles) trip to Canada.

I just got back from looking at the new 2016 Volt at an "exclusive" "private" "invitation only" GM event off-site from the main LA Auto Show.

They didn't really disclose any new detailed technical specifications. They did some of that 2-3 weeks ago. This time it was all about the visual and cabin design. It was under non-disclosure agreements so I can only talk in general terms. The photo above was taken (by someone else) in the main gathering room. Later they took small groups into another room to look over a fully unclothed Volt.

I liked it. More pictures and a post with a link to my impressions can be found in this GM-volt thread:

The front turn indicators sure look Prius like!

Yes. I noticed that right away, but generally speaking, the overall appearance does not look especially Prius-like.

I would expect not, I was just pointing out the similarity of the turn signal. Lets hope that GM came up with their own designs as they should!

I don't see the resemblance. The Prius has a round bezel, and the Volt uses a square one. The light itself looks similar, but I've seen such on other brands and models in parking lots. Which could very well be an off shelf part from a major supplier.
