I keep getting phone calls trying to market to me 'extended warranty' insurance policies for my Prius. For the past 5 or 6 months I have been getting these cold calls about once a week. This week I have had 3 of them.

In every case, they say that they have sent me a letter marketing their scam. In every case, the cold caller says that this is the first time that anyone from his/her company has tried to call me.

Sometimes I set the phone down and go do something else, returning every few minutes to say 'Oh really' or 'how does that work' every few minutes to keep them on the line, as long as possible. The longer they spend on me, the less time they have to scam others.

Today, I lost my cool entirely. I was yelling at him "Stop calling me, I do not want your product, you lying sack of shyte. Stop pestering me." I may have repeated that 5 or 6 times. After which, the salesmen seemed un-phased just wanting to sell me an insurance policy. So I hung up.

Is anyone else getting these cold calls?

We recently moved our AT&T land line phone over to Time Warner Cable. The nice feature of this is that the caller ID and phone number appears on your TV screen if on. So we get a chance to see who is calling before answering and just let it go to voice mail.

I have not received calls about the extended warranty but have received numerous mailings. That just goes to show you how much profit is made on these extended warranties :(

File a complaint if you've never had a business relationship with the company:

    National Do Not Call Registry

I had a company stop calling me (aka hung up on me) when I told them I was going to report them to the DNC Registry. They never called again.

Only thing worse if the Sirus / XM calls... I have repeatedly and nicely told them:"No mas!"

They never called. I get mail from them, but no calls.

The free offer when we first purchased was neat. I enjoyed going through the channels. But the signal was so choppy, the buffering was distracting. My wife hated it. I don't really hate it, but I don't see it worth a subscription fee.

I would expect that from you, chief.
If I could reach through the phone and lick their ear I would. :)

The volume will be very seriously clipped in transmission, so the illegal caller won't get the full ear blast you get.

The majority of calls coming into my home are illegal, violating the Do Not Call list, with spoofed Caller IDs. Sampling some of them, real ID attempts are almost uniformly blocked by the recorded/computer voice, then by the semi-trained human at the end of the voice menu tree.

I have been asking some why they work for a criminal enterprise. Can't they get a real, legal job? No decent answers yet.

I have successfully identified exactly one illegal caller, a local business with which I had no relationship whatsoever. I ended up with an apologetic card from the caller-employee, and a gift basket (from a reputable gift basket company) with a card from the business owner.

I screen all of my calls with the answering machine. I have had fantastic success changing my outgoing message to this:

"You have reached ###-####, a monitored number on the national do not call list. Please leave your name and ..."

Telemarketers always hang up after that phrase, since they don't have the time to figure out if "a monitored number" would get them in trouble or not. Works like a charm as long as there is a live person on the line. Computers calling from Bangalore via a Skype connection don't care either way. They already know that they are not traceable using current technology.

    We tried this:
The problem is the "Do Not Call List" had no effect and might have actually encouraged some calls. But the increase could have just been robot-dialers. Regardless, AT&T had increased the cost of a single land line to $30/month and the only calls were telemarketers. So both my wife and I 'unplugged' using pre-paid, T-Mobile cell phones:
    • $100/year -> $8.50/month, each, saving almost half
    • Works pretty much anywhere
    • Comes with caller-ID, voice-mail, and SMS text
The last time I accidently pickup on a robot caller, I told them in cold, dead voice,"This is a pre-paid, cell phone." They instantly hung-up.

I have not received any of those calls yet. I recently bought a new Panasonic cordless phone set. It has a CALL BLOCK feature that I like a lot. If you receive calls from a number you do not like you can block out that number. If the blocked out number calls you it will ring in one time. Might be something to consider. I have 3 cordless phones plus the base unit. Cost just under $100.00.

Then you have to consider how this is of any use against an illegal industry that changes the displayed (spoofed) Caller-ID numbers frequently, sometimes for each robocall.

You certainly have a point. My previous answering machine malfunctioned so I needed a new set anyway. Probably not worthwhile to buy one just for the purpose of blocking out unwanted callers for the reason you mentioned.

It just goes to show you how much of the warranty cost goes towards advertising.

This is what I have tried numerous times to explain to people: between advertising costs, profit, and the need to cover petty use and abuse of warranty claims, the warranty retail cost cannot come close to simply self-insuring for even small groups.

Absolutely. Car insurance is needed as the cost of a claim could be hundreds of thousands of £'s or maybe even £millions. Home insurance is needed as claims could be in the hundreds of thousands of £'s, and warranty cover is nonsense for the reasons you give. The claim limits are limited and the requirements are too extreme and the main items are engine and transmission. You're better off saving for a rainy day should it ever be needed. Personally they're a waste of time. It would be cheaper to replace your car for a newer one - almost.

Quite true, but it's still good stress relief.
To be honest....I actually don't use an air horn, but a signaling whistle off of my now-retired 782 gear that my wife keeps handy by the phone.
Even though my dear wife and I are probably the last people in the US with a land line, we get surprisingly few robo-calls and telemarketers despite the fact that we're regular voters.
    Of course....we have caller ID.
If I don't know the number???
It gets screened by the answering machine. :)
