Saw a Volt in an EV stall at the long term parking lot at San Francisco airport plugged into the 110V. All I could think about was the person was leaving >$500 cable to get some $4 worth of electricity. I parked in the regular stalls and left my EVSE in the trunk. Not worth the gamble to charge in public places.

Most of my public charging is at a Level 2, which has it's own cable. On the rare occasion I am using my Level 1, I use a padlock with a long hasp to secure the cable to my Curt hitch.

For the Prius in general this math never pencils out. I highly doubt the driver did this for any sort of money saving reason – I know I certainly don't.

Just loop your charging cable behind the rear tire and drive over it. That will definitely secure the cable, unless somebody wants to jack your car.

You don't want to drive your 3000lb car over your charging cord. That's a bad idea.

Meh. It's only 750 pounds per tire.

Driving over the cord to secure the EVSE was the actual recommendation given to me by the Priestess of Priuses. :)

I just leave it at home. As someone said with 12 miles EV, what is that 70 cents of gas. If I do charge I look for a level 2 station.

The bigger concern for me is that I have been unplugged several times at a public charger - and NOT by BEV's, which I would excuse. Once by a Fusion and once by a Volt. Nowadays when I charge at that location (one of the local malls close to my work), I put my little luggage lock through the handle. If people using that charger want to be d-bags, I can accommodate. Clipper Creek chargers make it really easy to determine whether a vehicle is finished or charging, so the offenders clearly knew what they were doing.

I'm annoyed because the GFI on the L1 charge cable is only about a foot from the plug. Most outlets are about 3' off the floor, therefore all that weight bears down on the plug when it's plugged in. Just try to mention using an extension cord and you'll hear from someone about how unsafe that would be. So what's safe about a plug with a lot of downward strain on it, due to the heavy GFI bearing down in it? What genius designed that?

I noticed that this thread is several years old, but I wanted to add an update. I secure my charging cable by using the transportation hook that came with my car and a padlock. I own a 2020 prius prime. The transportation hook is in a black plastic bag that is in the same cubby/trunk space that the charging cable is stored in. Just pop on of the four bumper covers off and screw it in place. Then secure the cable to the loop using a padlock. My car is street parked, so the added security gives me more peace of mind.

    I've attached photos.
