So this is 'old' news to us or perhaps just Nissan trying to point out during the build-up for Volt 2.0,"But I'm not dead yet."

This gives a clue to the technical direction I'm headed:
    • Numerator - desirable things like distance and payload volume
    • Denominator - energy cost, refueling delay
It will be a series of graphs since there is a speed element. But in the meanwhile, Volt vs Leaf sales suggests these are competitors in a technological field still changing rapidly . . . and the Leaf isn't dead, yet.

Leaf's not dead and not going anywhere. It doesn't compete with the Volt. The PiP competes with the Volt. When shopping for my EV, I didn't consider anything with an engine. There are a lot of people who shop for the Leaf and could care less about the Volt.

The Volt, PiP, i3-Rex, and other gas-electric hybrids with extended EV mode are intended for a different market than EV only. If the Tesla III comes out, that is a Leaf competitor.

leaf, volt and pip are #1, 2 and 3 in worldwide sales, according to hybrid cars.com. i think they are all doing pretty well at 140,000, 84,000 and 65,000 respectively, considering the obstacles.

Looking at the Inside EV folks' chart:

I don't know if I'd count out or fail to count the folks in the #4 spot ... they seem to be moving along pretty well.

considering the limited selling areas of the pip, it may be the overall winner. not that i'm biased.:love:when you think about it, pip, fusion and accord are the only 'everyman's car' in production.

I love the plug-in accord ... but calling it 'production' is right on the hairy edge of being a long stretch. Honda prices it extra ordinarily high & sells it in very teeny areas.

The 3 cars that make the cut world wide after the leaf, volt, phv are obviously the tesla model S, outland phev, and fusion energi.

In terms of dollar volume and profit, my guess is that tesla with the S and X will be number 1 next year world wide, with nissan taking second place. Ford with a variety of cars sold only in the US may somehow be number 3 if its plug-in sales keep growing.

In the US you hace to ask toyota why they have not at least rolled it out to other states. I have world wide numbers for the prius phv on a different thread. They are doing poorly in Japan and Europe, but chugging along selling just in CARB states and poor inventory is hurt them in Ausgust and September in Califoria.

    +1
The accord is doing poorly. People wanting a midsize 4 door sedan plug-in are choosing the fusion energi for price and electric range unless they are hard core honda fans. 309 for the year for honda from that chart above, versus more than 30 times that for the fusion.

Thanks! This led me to taking another look at the Model S and BMW i3:
    • GOOD+FAST - Model S
    • FAST+CHEAP - BMW i3 (2,635 lbs)
    • GOOD+CHEAP - Leaf
I took another look at the BMW i3 that seemed over priced for such a small car. Then I looked at the motor . . . Holly Carp!

Wouldn't do any good. They are all tied up with complaints about some software patch killing someone's mileage.

...I got a pop-up ad today saying Huge Discounts on PiP, maybe suggesting the supply issue has been resolved?
Maybe we can go out of 2014 with a Bang?

I contacted "Ask Toyota" in April and again in November of this year by e-mail. In both cases I indicated that I loved Toyota vehicles and that I would buy a BEV, if Toyota made a credible one that was distributed nationally (not a compliance car). Their response was: "We respect your opinions on the matter and have documented your comments at our National Headquarters, where they remain available for review from the appropriate departments. It is through feedback such as yours we are able to monitor and improve upon the quality of our products and services." I guess Craig Scott (who indicated that "...no one is coming to our door asking us to build a new electric car.”) wasn't on the distribution list. ;)

I've also visited my local Toyota dealership and spoke to the sales manager. I told him that the reason I wasn't buying a Toyota during this purchase cycle was because Toyota didn't have a credible car with a plug for me to evaluate and purchase.

    Then I got a Leaf.
