    Hi there -
I have a 2012 Prius, base model. It came with Bridgestone Assurance tires and I currently have 25,000 miles on the car. The tread on the tires is still decent (7/32"). The tires, though, pretty much stink. I live in Seattle and wet roads are handled terribly.

I'm looking to replace the tires and wanted to get some opinions. The top contender right now is the Michelin Defender XT from Costco for $400 all in.

    Other thoughts/opinions?

    Thanks,
    --Dan

Defenders are fine tires. Handle good with a quiet and comfortable ride. Long wearing.

Bridgstone do not make Assurance tires, Goodyear does. H

They're good if you want to trade off gas mileage for the other qualities.

My 2012 Prius v when I bought it in June 2014 had 45k miles. It's October now and the tires were at the wear bars at 87500 miles. Walmart sells the Goodyear assurance tire which is rated for the speed and chassis, performance for 99 each tire.

I had very good results with this tire. I had the fuel Maxx. I believe they are the same. They roll real well! H

You'll take a mpg hit with the Defenders.

My first recommendation, for decent traction and good mpg, would be the Michelin Energy Saver A/S or Bridgestone Ecopia EP20. The latter is more readily available, cheaper, and gives up a little mpg, but not bad. The Ecopia EP422 is an alternative to EP20, but as long as it's 195/65R15 you're looking for (the only size the EP20 comes in), I'd stick with EP20.

If traction in the wet is more important, then the Michelin Premier A/S is a good bet, gives up a little more mpg, but better grip.

(All the above are readily available at Costco right now, at least showing on the Canadian site, assume similar in your locale.)
