I was seriously interested in this car, but am a bit disappointed with the MPG ratings and the price.

Well, it is a smaller version of the RX/Highlander, which were Toyota's first power hybrids. The NX's power train likely should go into them if high fuel economy was the goal, but the NX itself is a heavy beast. It is just over 2 tons, while the Avalon hybrid, and heaviest Rav4 are at the 3600lbs range.

The aerodynamics are also a bee on vehicles of that shape.

2015 Lexus NX300h Hybrid FWD Test – Review – Car and Driver

There isn't enough power there to put in an RXh, that beast is 50 larger and would take around 9 seconds to 60 given the extra weight and drag. The hybrid premium is much lower than an RXh, so I think this thing will sell better than the highlander hybrid and the Lexus RXh. Then again it is a lot more money than for a cute ute (rav4, cr-v, escape).

Yeah, I was surprised at the weight, which no doubt dents both 0 to 60 performance and mpg.

Don't be, just look at the (very low) noise ratings.

I realized that after checking the curb weight. i also realize that the NX is a stretched Rav4 body, but did they even try to shave some weight off? How much of it is sound insulation?

Guess a noise cancelling system like Ford and Honda use is beneath them.

Any more, I go by the drag-energy. Engines and transmission are pretty well at the same level +/- 2-3%. Tires, well you gets what you pays for but tire pressure makes up for a lot of 'sins.'. It really comes down to the amount of energy needed for aerodynamic and rolling drag.

I think its important to realize this is a luxury SUV and comes with many items that that means. First we are starting at the base of the RAV 4 then adding some heavy motors and a battery. That adds weight. It is longer so more steel for the bigger size, and its luxury add nicer seats, sound deadening, etc.

    Compare Side-by-Side
The ESh with that sound deadening and seats is 3660 lbs. The NXh (2wd) is 4055lbs or 395 lbs more, which seems reasonable given the SUV versus sedan sheet metal difference. The weight does account for the acceleration difference. mpg is hit harder than acceleration 35 city versus 40 city because of the tires. People buying Suv assume stickier tires which adds to the rolling resistance compoundingthe weight. The frontal area and higher cd do hurt the hwy figure much more 31 versus 39. That hwy drop is going to happen regardless of the weight, so even if we got 40 in the city, the combined would still drop to 35 mpg not much different than the 33 mpg the 2wd version gets. It still gets 7 mpg better than the rav4 with 11 better in the city and a tie caused by aero dymacis on the hwy.

Now that is an interesting question: How does it measure on a noise meter ?

    Addendum
Wikipedia says: Active noise control - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Sounds very ymmv

Forget mpg!:D You want the NX 200 Turbo with F package; notice the slick headlights and the "sweeeeet" black rearview mirror, a nice touch IMO. 2015-Lexus-NX-200t-fsport-eminent-white-pearl-exterior-overlay-1204x677-LEXNXGMY150051.jpg It does the mpg with reg. gas while the others run on premium. We only get one model in Canada - NX300h w/ Executive Package for Cdn$58,850 plus taxes, approximately $6,000 more than an NX200t w/ Executive Package. (The regular NX200t starts at $40,950). Freight/PDI in Canada just approximately $2,000 for Lexus vehicles.

Note there are differences in the approach angle between the regular models and the F-Sport models (it's not just the gaping spindle grille). The NX is marketed as an SUV in North America, so the non F-Sport models have a severely cut lower front bumper to achieve an approach angle of 28.7°. It also results in a rather awkward profile with the leading edge of the hood quite a bit further ahead of the lower part of the front bumper. You may see photos of the NX without the F-Sport package with an upright front bumper but that's a non-American spec NX as the NX isn't marketed as an SUV outside of NA

Euro-Spec NX200t. Note the more upright front bumper, particularly below the licence plate (Yes it has B.C. plates. The launch was in Whistler, this shot was taken on the Georgia Viaduct, in Vancouver, B.C.)

Perhaps there might be some better photos showing the differences. I've been trying to see it and loaded the images into PowerPoint and used some photo editing. Eventually I saw the difference in the lower bumper but it was not easy.

Is the difference due to the stricter EU standards on pedestrian impact?

I like the US bumper. Reminds me of old Porsche rally cars.

No, the difference is that it's marketed as an SUV in North America and therefore needs the approach angle. Elsewhere, I guess it's marketed as a crossover or some other designation where they don't expect owners to take the vehicle off-road at all.

Yeah it's not easy to identify either. I didn't realise they were different until a publication pointed it out.

My vote is for the US spec bumper! Like the sharp edge look of it. Saw one on display at Westminster Lexus over the summer and fell in love with the NX, will be on my list for future purchase. Gotta Love Lexus! :D

    I guess . . . . . if you like giant monster sized front end grills, that is . . . . .

eventually the grill / expanded metal look will encompass everything north of the wind shield I fear.

it's getting pretty close, all ready, imo.

They arrived here a few months ago ...... not a bad car, but when I saw the price ..... €44,000 / US$55,000 / GB£35,000 / Can$62,500 .... I thought that's a bit much and that's for the entry level model. The top spec is €53,000!!!

I know if I was in the market for small SUV type car and had €50k to spend, there's a few others I'd choose first
