The rear seat leak is what I expected GM to do, and is really all a large compact to small midsize car needs to appeal to young families. It might even work for taking 5 people out to lunch. No car in that size range will really work for 5 adults on a long trip.

It's difficult to tell rear seat legroom unless you can climb into the backseat. I was at the event and we weren't allowed to get inside the car. For one thing, the interior upholstery in the rear seating area was clearly in prototype form -- I could see unsewn seams and corners that were tucked into place.

We just won't know until GM is ready to let people sit in a production-ready car.

Sure, they "leaked" it lol. Or maybe GM purposely did it this way in order to have people confirm it for them. It's all part of their sinister master plan to make the Volt a car people will actually like!

    "/insert maniacal laughter track here"

Joking aside, I wonder if they're going to confirm or deny this 5th seat, now that someone more or less said it.

Here is the recent market sales ranking:

    • Does not include the hatchback which is 'off the scale'
    • Two diesels have out sold the Volt
In engineering, the rule of thumb:
    • First generation does a few things great but crappy on the rest
    • Second generation fixes the crappy things only to reveal what was hidden, already broken by the first ones
    • Third generation pretty well solves the problem and leads to expanded functionality
So Chevy is approaching their second generation Volt and it will take another 3-4 years after that before they'll finally have it figured out. Then they can expand the architecture to other platforms. But Toyota, Ford, Nissan, Honda, Hyundai, VW, and Tesla won't be sitting on their hands.

No I did product marketing for years. I'm sure they meant this tidbit for the Detroit Auto Show so they could be heard above the din. This show is about fuel cells and sporty cars. Bad job chevy marketing department. Ofcourse the old guy, the "chevy run deep" guy got fired for fraudulent internal accounting (no its not a felony because its internal but pretty bad), he is running first element with Dr. Brown. Yep the hydrogen fueling station start up with no experience that has loans of $21M from toyota and Honda, and grants that they don't need to pay back to the state of california of $27.6M. The Toyota and Honda "loans" were needed to secure the free grants. Dr. Brown is the professor from UC-Irvine that wrote the papers justifying the $220M state program.

One thing that is easy to confirm is the putting of a carseat in the middle. I already had someone here at work point out how much of a pain that can be when it's next to a door. Having to bend into low vehicle with a low-handing door opening isn't going to be convenient.

That's why I hadn't said much about getting a 5th seat. It simply wan't realistic. More legroom is still possible though.

what surprised me the most about that article was the reader's comments - of whom many (existing Volt owners) seemed to be disappointed with this next generation.

Maybe Doug will want to speak on Toyotas' behalf on why being hooked up with a hack like this is a 'smart' thing. Because if these folks are the geniuses that he refers to Toyota may likely end up looking like a horses a$$, to the tune of hundreds of millions.

What quote from that article led you to that impression?

The actual article they are quoting is from mychevroletvolt.com. It ends with a summary statement saying:

might want to reread my post. I didn't say a quote from the article. I was commenting on the various comments after the article .... Did you read the comments? Those were what I was referencing. Like many next-generation car enthusiast they are hoping for the world - and they often show discontent when it doesn't happen. That's just the nature of the beast I guess.

I read them. I don't see anything particularly negative there either although it would be par for the course to have a few snarky comments on any article on an Internet news site. These aren't only Volt owners commenting on that article so some folks make bad assumptions and don't know what they are talking about.

gm is not promising to give toyota a run for their money. if they were, they would be making a hybrid to compete with the lift back. gm is just making the volt for publicity and federal dollars.

i love comment #17: the end of the kingdom of prius is at hand. hello? any intelligent life there in fantasy volt land?

Toyota only paid to have him do research and toyota and honda have only given First Element $7M and $14M loans. They have no equity, in fact presenting the loans as investment in infrastructure is rather, um, questionable. I think if First Element is actually held accountable for their insider information, studies for cash, etc, toyota looks fairly clean, total deniability. The real offending party is CARB, toyota and honda simply provided the money for carb to have this fraudulent dealing, and I think its unlikely it will end up in court. That means CARB (mary nichols) owes toyota a favor, perhaps the quid pro quo for the cash was the extra 2 zev credits (now 5 total for fast refueling), and rewritten rules to keep bevs from getting any of the 5. It should be noted the volt and i3 also do more than half their miles on electricity and have even faster refueling with 0 carb zev credits :()

H8s gonna hate. such is the blogesphere. I didn't even know prius had a kingdom.

The Prius kingdom is shown in some of the corny Pruis commercials. Even some Prius owners would like that to end.

Is that the one where the kid is sitting in the rain so he can wash the car?

I really think Prius needs a new ad agency. The target market isn't only a bunch of eco-techno geeks who want to save the mushroom kingdom. Most of us, based on the comments in this forum, just want a really fuel-efficient car while satisfying most of the normal human appetites for power, cargo room, ride comfort and reliability. I think ads like this only alienate those of us who resent the image it paints of a Prius-owner. No wonder we get the finger so often.
