i mean between the new volt and the old ones. i have heard there are some amazing deals as low as under $20,000. doubt you'll come close to that on the new one.

Or Toyota just leases the HEMI trademark, and applies it to Atkinsonized engines.
Or they just made a real hemispherical engine, which the HEMI is not.

I drove a Ford Ranger pickup during the 90's and then got the 2001 Prius. The drivers of smaller pickups are not a completely lost cause. :)

i had a ranger as a second vehicle for utility purposes. we have seen a few pick up drivers come over from the dark side. i suppose they would have to be pleasure vehicles for status or whatever. might be quite a few like that though, i see some pretty pristine pick ups around.

In my area there are no deals, at least that I could find. every volt was in the 35K range with the only incentive being the federal tax credit. Like I said I'm patiently waiting for January. If the gen 2 Volt isn't worth the price I will get a gen 1 and still be happy. Either way the Prius is going bye bye next year.

    What area is that?

There are dealers in the Los Angeles area like Keyes and another that I can't recall offhand that regularly discount Volts by over $4,000 and even more for some 2014 cars that are still available. They can ship out of state and do the deal over the phone and may be quite a bit cheaper than any local dealer in many areas of the U.S. at the very least, they could give you bargaining leverage with a local dealer.

I may look into Keyes and Rydell and see what kind of deal I can get through them.

Edit: Indiana (my location) has an EVSE install incentive and off peak charge rates for EV's but nothing for purchasing the car itself.

Check out the online new car vehicle inventory at Chevrolet New & Used Car Dealer - Indianapolis & Carmel, IN | Penske Chevrolet. Unlike many Indiana Chevy dealers, they have several dozen new Volts on the lot and ready to sell with good discounts at their Indianapolis location.

I counted about 17 new 2014 Volts and several of them were under $32,000 or were discounted by up to $3,500 off MSRP. That's obviously a starting point for negotiating....

Also, see this thread about Rydell's sale expiring this Wednesday as an example of the discounts that are occasionally offered by Los Angeles dealers. They are advertising 2015 Volts with a $5,000 discount off MSRP for $29,995.

Nice find, thanks for the information. Should come in handy for negotiation with my local dealers at the very least.

Byers in Columbus OH has a few 2014's listed under $30K also, if that's a reasonable drive for you.

No surprises there, dealers need to free up space for new models.

it took me a bit to figure out how some dealers can discount so deep. The best I can tell is by cutting their profit margin to the bare bone the dealer is entitled (manufacturers' blessing) to order tons more cars (because ultimately they sell in such high volume) than the other dealer. Apparently some dealers can make more profit through volume than the "high-profit" dealers can do with their lower volume. I've found that the high volume dealers are often better with their people skills too - so it's kind of a double blessing.

From what I have heard, dealers get monthly bonuses from the manufacturer for hitting certain sales numbers.
These bonuses can be much larger than the losses incurred from a couple of cars sold at a loss.

Some time ago I knew a bank officer who provided loans to car dealers for buying lots of cars from the dealer. He mentioned that inventorying the "collateral" required explicitly inventorying the arriving cars to ensure the value of the cars matched the value of the loan. Two very interesting notes were made:
    1) The loan was for the EXACT value they paid the maker for cars, which had little to do with the "wholesale cost".
    2) The number of cars bought on the loan was smaller than the number of cars delivered. Apparently, "bonus" cars would sometimes be included in the shipment. So while the dealer may sell the bought cars at a "loss", the bonus car was pure profit.

It's a long episode but worth the listen. :)

    NPR - This American Life
"We spend a month at a Jeep dealership on Long Island as they try to make their monthly sales goal: 129 cars. If they make it, they'll get a huge bonus from the manufacturer, possibly as high as $85,000 — enough to put them in the black for the month. If they don't make it, it'll be the second month in a row. So they pull out all the stops. Photo gallery here. NOTE: the Internet version of this episode includes un-bleeped curse words.Bleeped version here."

Might want to rethink that. Getting a good deal on the next Yugo may not be what you actually are after.
