CA is finding watever method to generate more revenue...
does it mean those who have 2012/2013 prius, they 'll have to do smog check in 2015?

Update: My registration is due a few days into December. I found that I actually had 2 different notices for registration renewal. One had "Smog Test Required" at the top and one did not, but both had the same online registration renewal code. I took a chance and went online and paid for registration renewal using the code and it did not ask or mention anything about smog. A few short days later I received my new 2015 registration sticker and card in the mail.

Of course, this doesn't mean that they won't send me an updated request from Sacramento, but it does mean I have a 2015 sticker, which is really all I need to park it in my front yard without getting cited for "abandoned/junk car(s)" by my city.

I think the state SMOG fee is already included in registration for the Prius. We just don't need to pay for the test to be done.

I don't think that fee is for the state, it's for the mechanics that perform the service

I wish they'd SMOG test diesels and motorcycles. I'm sick of the rolling coal BS on pickups and loud, smelly exhaust Harleys.

    They don't? Wow.

One of the hardest parts of owning my old diesel as a taxi was getting it to pass it's six monthly emissions test.

MikeDee, you don't say where you live... But under the assumption that it's California, since that's what this thread is about: Motorcycles are exempt, but diesels are not (unless they're model year 1997 or older).

I've known people to make mods that fail emissions tests, but stick a switch under the dash somewhere so they can go back to "normal" and pass emissions (or avoid attracting the attention of a passing officer). I would assume at least some of the rolling coal morons do this as well.

You can report smoking vehicles here, or by dialing #SMOG from your cell phone in some areas.

You can also look up their test history by license plate number, if you're curious.

I just got my DMV notice for my Plug in Prius and no smog required so they must have fixed it.

    The website now says:
    • Hybrid Vehicles will require a smog certification beginning March 26, 2015.
My car is due for its re-registration about a week before that, although it's only ~6 model years old still, so should be exempt until next year anyway.

    Bummer.
