What is a "Toyota Hybrid System Tech training course"?

Why does the owners manual state use 87 Octane or higher, it gives no warning about using premium gas?

I think you missed " When was this course, and what generations does it cover?"
I bet it is about gen 1 and also applies to gen 2.

Interesting document. It also discloses there's a 5 liter reduction in gas tank capacity (due to bladder tank) at -10C.

I think Jimbo is right, though - this is not necessarily current information.

If it discusses a bladder, it is about Gen 2

Our 2005's tank has already shrunk quite a bit. We'll be lucky to get more than 27 litres on a low fuel light refuel. (When new, it's 35 litres, like a normal 45 litre tank)

High octane fuel is a complete waste of money for most cars, simple as.

If you run a tuned car, with mapping for the higher octane, by all means use it, otherwise, just use regular petrol.

Different car, but similar instructions. My son was running 91 octane in his '91 Miata when it was two or three years old, and began having starting problems. The dealer said the factory bulletin advised just what Toyota did. Later, with 150K miles on the odometer, he installed a larger engine and went back to the higher octane, and said it ran better without the starting problems. I now have the car, and run 89 or 91 most of the time, with an occasional tank of 87. I notice no difference whatsoever. Like Bisco, I have always put 87 in my three Prius.

From past experience, (old school), high octane was for high compression engines, the pip is not. So regular it is for me.

    Reoccurring debate.

For me it's pretty simple. I choose to pay a little more for gasoline by going to "Top Tier" stations. People can tell me this is a waste, and perhaps it is, but it's my choice, and the price difference is minimal. I think there can be fuel system benefits gained by using fuels with good fuel system maintaining additives. If it's a chimerical, commercial delusion? I'll pay the extra 8 cents a gallon, that I might save going to a cut rate gas station.

What I won't pay for? Premium over Regular.

Toyota recommends regular, the vehicle runs fine on regular...I don't think an very occasional tank of premium would hurt anything, but overall...the vehicle runs on regular.

I've started using Premium and also have installed a Cold air intake. The car runs much better is is ALOT more powerful

Noise is not power, a before/after dyno report is power.

Pencilgeek has dyno'ed a Prius. It shows a 3 HP peak variation, but at some points there is a 20 HP variation on successive runs, I suspect the Hybrid battery state of charge is not identical.

    http://priuschat.com/attachments/pencilgeek-jpg.26086/

It would be a challenge to measure minor HP changes.

I was actually looking for a thread on it as I was considering getting it done next year. I must give the tuner I know a shout and see if he's ever done a Prius, even though I know it's highly unlikely!

I'm always curious what power my car makes, from my 79bhp Golf to my 200bhp+ Bora. All my cars have made a shade over the manufacturer figures and out it down to regular maintenance rather than anything else
