Our 05 Prius is away at college, but we got a call from our daughter saying that, when she went to fill it, the pump would not allow her to put gas in. She went to a second station and found the same thing. At a third station, an attendant somehow managed to fill the tank for her. Is there some kind of sensor that may be failing here?

Many have this experience. It has to do with the bladder in the fuel tank becoming stiff and unwilling to expand in the cold weather. The main things to do are to open the gas cap for a couple of minutes before starting to fill, allowing the bladder to relax, and to fill as slowly as possible. Some pumps go faster than others, so one can't use them full blast.

What NH said. This bladder issue gets much worse in the winter and the age of the car. The cold temps makes the bladder much less flexible and so does age.

My bladder used to be much more flexible lol.

I have an 07 Prii with over 160k miles on her. She's been in the family since I'm the 2nd owner this is the 2nd winter (this is the 2nd one just starting) that her gauge/bladder are off. Every friday I fill her up I get up to 300 to a tank.. But I do drive her like I stole her. :p I only got 2.5 gallons in and pump shut off sadly the gauge went from 1bar to over half a tank and in the hour and half of driving it went right back down to 2bars...Lucky me... This is WHY YOU GUYS SHOULD TAKE YOUR PRII'S IN TO TOYOTA TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED (yeah you gotta pay for it but...) AND THEY CAN ADD IT TO THE LIST OF TSBS ON THIS SHITUATION SO IT CAN BE RECALLED.
