    If the shoes were fairly worn and the drum has a self adjuster , that probably needs to be screwed back in.

    @69shovelhead:

    you're incorrect, sir.

    The clutch slave (properly "Clutch Slave", NOT "slave cylinder", even though that's a commonly used term) is A slave cylinder, so are the caipre acuators on disc breaks AND the wheel slaves on drum breaks.

    the term "slave" only indicates they are downstream in the hydraulic heierarchy. That is, they deploy pressure, they don't generate it or collect it.

    Either way, it's a hair-splitting difference.

    Still wondering how the OP is doing...

    btw @ Robert Holt: I sometimes cracked the bleed nipple just as you say. but I stoppped doing it because it always seemed to wind letting air in and requiring a bleed. if you just compress SLOWLY, you can often avaoid the need to bleed afterwards.

    A tube on the end of the nipple placed in a jar of brake fluid will take care of that. Most autoparts stores carry one on a magnet for under $5 I believe. It is used for bleeding the brakes.

    I think bisco nailed it. The drums have a bead of rust around the outer edge. A light turning would clean this up. Take your drums to any brake shop.

    If friction surface is good and you only want to get inside edge back to stock (you will have ridge left because of friction area wear) you can just use hand file or even sand paper.
