How to: OEM Wiper Blade Replacement ($25)

    Part Numbers (Prices are retail and updated as of December 2014):

    85214-08050 - Driver (US) - $8.51
    85214-68030 - Passenger (US) - $8.32
    85214-52060 - Rear - $8.32

    Total: 25.15 + local tax.

    These replacement blades are only the actual blade. The wiper mount and tension springs (for lack of a better term) are not included.

    I started with the rear window.

    Step 1: Undo the clip that allows the wiper to pull away from the window

    Step 2: You may not find this necessary, but continue to rotate the wiper mount away from the stem and it'll separate. You could leave it on and try to manipulate the wiper out, but it's easier off of the car.

    Step 3: Slide Wiper and tension springs out. 20131025_092546.jpg

    Step 4: Replace both tension springs into new wiper and reinstall. 20131025_093855.jpg

    Step 5. Repeat for windshield wipers. The wipers slide out easiest towards the windshield. The drivers side angle is awkward, so you'll have to leave the wiper against the windshield to get it all the way out.

    Step 6: The only thing to note for the fronts is that the direction of the wipers matter. There is an indentation on the wiper itself that the mount must clip into. If this isn't done, the wiper would launch itself off of the mount over time. I've tried to take a photo of this, but it should be intuitive when you do it yourself. This image shows the mount pin and recess within the wiper. These should connect.

    Overall a very cheap and easy DIY.

    Great write up and pictures. Thanks for doing this. I changed mine two weeks ago but didn't do the rear because I couldn't figure it out and it doesn't get used as much. Now I know how to do the rear.

    I took my fronts off to make it easier. If you're facing the car, there's a clip to the left of where the arm attaches to the wiper. Just pull up that clip and it will let you remove the wiper from the arm.

    Got a question for you about the metal springs/retentions: When you removed yours, was the bow (bend) in them from the factory out (away from the blade or toward the glass when down) or in (towards the blade and away from the glass when down)? Mine were in towards the blade / away front the glass. Seems like it wouldn't apply as much wiping pressure but I put them back the same way and they work great. Just curious...

    Does your windshield have a crack? Mine does and I just wonder how much for replacement...btw nice how to - wiper blades,thank you

    I'm not sure which of your examples is which, so this should make it more clear as to what I did.

    I tried to flip the springs, but it was difficult to keep them in the wipers, so I didn't spend that much time trying.

    No, but this seems to be a common problem. Do a search for 'windshield' in the General forum and you should find a few threads about replacement costs.

    Good answer - pic was worth a thousand words. Yes, that's how mine were from the factory. Seems like the bow in the opposite direction would apply more pressure but that's clearly not how it's supposed to be. Glad you tried it.

    Folks doing this make note of the direction of the springs.

    Thanks so much. I just paid 50.00 bucks just for my inserts at my local dealer in Jackson Tn. Thought I was getting abused. So here we have it. Contacted this same dealer a few minutes ago first thing I was told they did not sell insert's at this dealership then ask why this receipt was from their dealership then was quoted 10+ for the inserts. Rip off. The internet is a grand thing.

    Windshield quotes are in the $750 range but I found an oem glass installed for $275.00 at Low Cost Auto Glass. It works.

    Yep, I even questioned it at the parts counter. I doubt that local is still the best way to purchase these... but I haven't looked into it more.

    Amazon has 85214-68030 for $8.73, so that's only slightly cheaper if Amazon doesn't charge tax in your state. Everything else is more after shipping on Amazon/ebay, and there aren't many options.

    I'll check at my dealership at my 2-year maintenance next week. I was all excited to get a full replacement set for under $15, now it looks like it'll be $10 more. After 23k miles and 2 years of Ohio winters, my rear blade is starting to tear. At $9 after tax, maybe I'll just superglue it to make it last 'til spring...

    My dealer just quoted me the same prices, except $8.61 instead of $8.51, so one of us may have misheard. Which sucks, because I was looking forward to reasonably-priced blade changes, especially considering they're only inserts, not the entire blade. $9 (including tax) is unreasonable for that tiny thing in the back window.

    My rear wiper is starting to peel - looks like I'll super glue it back on for a while to avoid paying $9 for it. I can try checking with other nearby dealers, but it looks like these aren't something that they discount at all, except for 10% off coupons they send me. Hopefully there's a non-OEM version within the next few years.

    Just saw that on the Toyota owners site, there's a "service offers" screen under "parts & offers". My closest dealership doesn't have any offers for anything, but some others nearby have $5 off wipers coupons. I think it's $5 off the whole set.

    I pulled out the invoice again:

    I had the middle part number incorrect. The three wipers should be:

    85214-08050 - Driver (US) - $8.51
    85214-68030 - Passenger (US) - $8.32
    85214-52060 - Rear - $8.32

    Total Before Tax - $25.15

    I'll clean up this thread of all of my misinformation.

    Moderators, is it possible to update the thread title from $15 to $25?

    I ended up getting a Rain-X Fusion (I think? Or maybe the Rain-X Hybrid?) at my local Meijer for $17.49. I watched a few videos on how to swap out just the blades and considered doing that--but in the end, with the brutally cold temperatures around here lately of 4ºF above 0º for the day and wind chills down to -30ºF, I thought the better of it & just bought the entire wiper assembly. Driver's side rubber started to fray and come loose & in this weather it became paramount for safety, so I just spent the $$.

    I threw away the stock blade that came with my '13 Prius C 2, and now I'm wondering if I'll regret that. Guess I could dig it out of the dumpster, but in reality the Rain-X replacement looks fine & I guess I shouldn't worry about it much. I'm sure eBay will supply me an OEM if I really want it for some reason or the dealer. I checked my ToyotaCare packet, no wipers included--and I'm at 27,000 miles so am out of warranty now anyway.

    The rear wiper needs to be replaced soon too, but I think I may just let the dealer do that when I go in for the 30k oil change/rotation in another month or two. I know the OP said it's "easy," but stuff like that is never easy for me & I already have horror stories about trying to swap out just the blades in my '88 Oldmosbile Delta 88 for several years…it was a disaster. It's worth the few extra bucks to have an expert do it for me at this point…and in this weather.

    I bought a cheap replacement blade and simply cut a replacement to fit the rear. I'll get two out of it.

    I couldn't see paying that much for such a tiny wiper blade. It was easy enough to fit and get back together, and will be easier next time.

    I just super-glued the back blade (and a few parts of the front ones). Will try your method when the blade becomes more destroyed. Did you just buy an insert that you cut to fit? I've never replaced just the inserts before, so I don't know if they're universal or if there are different types...
