Very cool new video by Bill Nye...a little short on facts but he claims he stuck 80 deg F footballs in fridge and cooled to 50 deg F and saw minor change.

WATCH: Bill Nye conducts experiment debunking Patriots' Bill Belichick's Deflategate explanation | NJ.com

My interest in Deflate Gate is mostly over, assuming now the equipment guy simply deflated the footballs in the back room. If that turns out to not be the case (because the Patriots found a "legal" way to deflate the balls) I will be interested to hear how they did that.

I feel the NFL needs to update the football preparation rules and some of my recommendation prior page still stand.

Actually, Nye did not bother to report the start and ending pressures [bad], but he reported a 6% change. Isn't that about what we calculated using absolute pressure changes ?

A drop from 27.2 psi down to 25.7 psi is 5.5%.
Or, a 6% drop would give 25.57 psi, meaning a 1.63 psi drop.

Yep, he is getting the same results as everybody else. Nothing debunked, just a little self-publicity for the fellow.

Or are we now trying to prove the Pats (or the hapless ballboy awaiting waterboarding) criminally deflated the bills 0.4 psi ?

I shouldn't have said I am not interested, just saying case closed for now.
I was going to buy a football and do some Bill Nye stuff, but that would be if I was trying to find a fancy way to do it.

What was the temp in AZ?
I heard they took special precautions before the game...did not hear much about during and after.
But they must have used VooDoo dolls on the other coach...what was he thinking on the goal line?
Seemed to me Pats outplayed them today, and the SeaHawks kept finding a way to keep up, including the crazy reception at the end.
    Good win for NE!

He is accepting all the blame for "what some observers labelled one of the worst calls in football history.".

Carroll explained that last set of downs after the game:

He intended to call runs, including 4th down if needed, but the 'hawks had the wrong package of players on the field for 2nd down so he called a pass that he thought would end up being a waste of a down most likely (but give him time to sort out the correct package) or a TD if lucky.

I'm sure he would like to have that set back, but his reasoning was not so screwy as it appears. He also trusted Wilson to not throw a risky pass in this situation, in general a fair assumption. And only a rookie would have jumped the ball and intercepted. A more seasoned player would have played the odds and batted the ball down.

And remember folks, this set of downs only happened because of the luckiest catch of the year. Seattle was very closely matched Vs the Pats and the Packers. In these games a lucky* play or two determines the winner. Seattle won one they should have lost (Vs GB) and lost one they could have won. This is why it is foolish to declare the winner with confidence ahead of time like JC.

*By lucky I mean that if the play was repeated 10 times, most times the result would be reversed.

Now how the hell did Brady even complete a pass, since he had to use pressurized balls ?!

so many of these games can go either way. as you say, one lucky play can change everything. as vince wilfork said before the game, no matter how well you play, if you lose by one point or one play, you walk off the field and nobody cares about you. and the pats have been there too. if you had no dog in the fight, it was a great game to watch.

I keep marveling at the fact that Seattle really only played one half of decent football the last two games and were not trampled each game.

Oh, and I'm quite happy that Brady gave the virtual finger to all the deflate gate fools.
There are just not that many football players who elevate the game and are role models. Brady does, because he transcends his (relatively) mediocre athleticism with grit, perseverance, and a very rare football intelligence. Andrew Luck, Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning are the same, albeit better athletes. Wilson may be of the same rare breed.

In my opinion, too many rules can kill the enjoyment of a sport. As long as one team doesn't have an unfair advantage over the other, it shouldn't matter. Whether deflating a football creates an advantage for one team over the other is debatable, but once we descend into a "rules is rules" whether they make sense or not, mindset, then it becomes less of a sport than a bureaucracy.

I beg to differ. They had, I believe, 3 timeouts left. There was no reason to pass (autopilot or not) in that situation. Does Wilson take some of the blame? Of course. He threw it. But you don't run a multimillion dollar team on autopilot, or you shouldn't.

i think they might have only had one. they had the wrong player formation on the field, and even with the right formation, lynch is only one for five from the one yard line. it's easy to second guess, but i pete hoped to put it away with a surprise pass and get it over with. let's face it, that interception was as improbable as kearse's catch a few minutes earlier, or david three's in the loss to the giants, which was also in arizona.

Re: deflategate- we don't have to be a Pat's haters to realize the NFL had crazy rules allowing teams to customize their own footballs for the game. also NFL was not maintaining chain of custody during the pre-games. I would think those policies change for the future. A lot of this incident is the NFL's fault, although it was the QB's who requested the footballs in advance for pre-rubbing etc..

Not Nate Silver, but another statistics guy has shown the Pat's have very few fumbles starting in 2006 when the NFL allowed the teams to have control of the footballs before the game. So that's interesting and suggests the NFL will: (1) set the balls at 13 psia; and (2) the NFL will have it's hands full going back to 2006 to see evidence. I almost they think gotta plug the inflation hole for the game, listening to one QB say they all did that if they did not like the feel of the ball.
