My wife and I recently purchased a 2014 prius c 4 here in Alberta. We have quickly realized that there is no remote starter option. How does one warm there car up and keep the doors locked on a smartkey system? Not comfortable leaving a car running unlocked. Vehicle is parked outside with plugin. In Alberta winter warm ups are necessary. Any help is appreciated. Dealership is adamant that if we add a remote starter the warranty will be void. So need warmup options. Thanks again.

toyota makes a remote starter for the lift back, not the c?

never heard of a remote start voiding the warranty, sounds like fud.

what if you start it and lock the door with the mechanical key?

that if lock is not frozen :(

To OP: if it works for you, make a copy of the key so you don't have pull it out of FOB all the time. Also put system in "auto" "A/C off" "recirculation" seems to work the best for heating up good luck

What exactly is plugged in ??
If you have a good block or coolant heater, extra engine warmup should not be necessary.

BUT......you can go out, start the car and then get out, lock the doors and walk away.
The car should continue to run.......with a couple of complaining beeps as you depart.

I don't know how long it will continue like that but I think it is a LONG time.

Long enough to warm up, for sure - my C ran for 54 hours straight powering house essentials after Hurricane Sandy and used less than two gallons of gas.

i don't think a block heater will have your car toasty warm when you get in like warming up the engine with the heat full blast.

EasyRider, I did mean plugged as in Block heater. :)

It is not terribly cold right now but it will be later this weekend and into next week. It really is my own fault as I should have done more research into the car and if addons could be done. On a positive note my wife absolutely loves the car.

    go outside
    turn on engine
roll down window and exit car (take your key with you)
while on outside, reach down and lock doors, then roll back up window
go back inside the house, until you need to come out and go (use mechanical key inside SKS to manually unlock door)

or buy a remote start kit...see some online that only costs around $100 and uses your oem remote, and the instructions should be so easy a kid learning colored blocks can do it

How does one roll up a window from the outside of the car ??

This is NOT a complicated problem.
    Start car......set climate controls.
    Exit car with FOB.
Lock doors with button on FOB.
Ignore the BEEP, BEEP as you walk away.
    Done.

[This is not exactly correct. See test 2 posts below.]

You can not lock doors with fob with smartkey setup. The doors do not lock if the car is running or in ready mode.

Assuming that is true, then you would need to use the manual key as originally stated.
Unless you can explain to me how you can roll up a window from outside the car.

    [update]
    Just tested my C3:
No electronic means of locking the doors works when it's running; FOB fails and so does the button on the door.
The ONLY thing that works is the mechanical key. And once you lock it with the key, you must also UNlock it with the key too.

When I bought my 2012 prius c two years ago, I had the dealership install a third party remote starter, and I think it cost $600 (needed one of the fobs that they then put in the car somewhere). It worked, but it would shut the engine off whenever I got in the car. I then realized it also dragged my mpg down, and since I parked in a garage, remote starting it wasn't as practical as I thought it was going to be.

One can roll up a window from the outside of their car, b/c, the window is open and hopefully they can use their lazy arm to reach in and tap that automatic window button...and I'm pretty sure all the tiers of the C comes with automatic window for the driver side.

but I guess you don't know that, b/c you don't even know that fob keys are pretty much disabled once the car is running

A 3rd party remote start can be installed by a reputable shop. It will NOT void the warranty. If they fry something while installing then yes, they don't have to warranty that part. I've had a remote start on my C2 for a year, no issues. Also have one on my wife's Venza with smart key same time, no issues.

I appreciate that it worked on your key model c2. On the c3/4 it is a push button start with no keyslot. It is a different set up. Called 6 reputable installers locally and none of them would like to do it. Reasons were pretty much the same that Toyota wasn't worth the hassle to deal with.

I appreciate everyones feedback and suggestions. Thanks for taking the time to respond. We have decided, for now, to not try to have a starter installed as it appears it would be a warranty nightmare with toyota if something electrical went wrong.

No need to get nasty. We all overlook things occasionally. Even you, probably.
