I have a 2010 1.8 Prius which is displaying the red !, amber !, abs and vsc lights. I have fitted a new battery which has not fixed the problem. I took it to the dealer who checked the fault codes. The only one being generated is C1659.

The dealer seems to think that it could be related to the front tyres being 225 45 17 rather than 215 45 17 as fitted to the rear. He asked me to get new tyres fitted and then bring it back. The difference in rolling circumference is less than 2% and so I can't see that this would cause the proble.

I am worried it could be a failed brake actuator, would it be possible for the main dealer check if this is the fault easily?

When I drove it yesterday, the fault disappeared for a few seconds before returning. Each time with the red ! Fault light be followes by the yellows.

    Anyone had a similar problem.

    Yes just one code C1659.

Any know what a C1659 fault code on its own indicates?

According to this doc, The detection item is Brake System Malfunction and the trouble area is electronically controlled brake system.

Have you checked the emergency brake, to ensure it's fully released? I would try to fully engage it and then release it.

DTC C1659 would be stored in the Advanced Parking Guidance System ECU.
As you may know, the Intellegent parking assist requires that you lightly apply the brake to control the vehicle speed during the parking procedure. The Advanced Parking Guidance System ECU communicates with the ABS ECU and monitors brake operation.
This DTC indicates that the Advanced Parking Guidance System ECU thinks it saw a fault with the ABS system. There should be a DTC in the ABS ECU, or a fault that prevents the ABS ECU from communicating, including a fault that prevents the ABS ECU from powering up.

With regards to the mis-matched tires, smaller drive wheels can trigger the traction control system, but you have the larger tires on the front. I'm not sure how the ABS system would react to that, besides a possible WSS (wheel speed sensor) code.
Did this issue occur shortly after installing the mis-matched tires?

The car has only done 40,000 miles.

The tyres have been fitted for nearly a year before the problem appeared so I don't think this is the problem.

You would think the fault code would be more specific than just indicating an issue with the braking system.

I wonder how much effort it will take the dealer to identify the faulty part causing the problem. If it is a case of swapping in parts then this could get very expensive.

Whoever advised you to replace the battery to see if it helps, is not doing you any favors.

This DTC is only saying that it sees something abnormal with an associated system, so look there for details.
That is why I expect an ABS DTC to be stored. Otherwise it may be a data communication fault or a problem with the Advanced Parking Guidance System ECU.

Do you have anything plugged in to the DLC (diagnostic link connector, AKA OBDII port) such as a drive monitor from an insurance company or a bluetooth device? I have read somewhere on other threads that these devices can sometimes corrupt the data stream and cause problems.

There is nothing plugged in DTC.Would the associated systems not generate a fault code also? How can these associates systems be interrogated? The main dealer was the one who suggested changing the battery!!!!

Bravo to the dealer for knowing the 12v if low could gum up the works, unfortunately, unless you put 4 tires on the same size, the dealers got you cold, possibly borrow a set from another nearby prii?

Agree. You need to have four of the same sized tires to get a good baseline.

The faut is removed when the battey is disconnected and reconnected.

The warning lights to not then reappear when the car is started and stationary.

When you drive for about 300 yards the red! appears first followed a few seconds later by the amber fault lights.
