Just checked the pressure and the front tires were 55 PSI and rears 50. Just could not believe it. I thought it's the gauge, but checked on other car and seemed fine. I keep it at 39/37, I've no idea how this happened. I could have not done this. Any ideas?

It hasn't seen any service since I purchased the car. I do the oil changes.

Maybe the weather? It was -10F here in Chicago.. I've no idea.

Cold weather will make them drop, hot weather will raise them so I doubt it is the weather at -10F if you kept em' at 39/37. To go up that much in the winter seems air had to be added somehow.

Was it in for anything, anywhere? Recall, inspection?

Can't be the weather. For pressure changes like that the temperature would have to change >130F. Did you go to Hell and back?

You have a 2012 that hasn't seen service and you just now checked your tire pressure?

It hasn't seen service since I purchased the car which was a year ago.

And I do check the pressure regularly.

You keep saying it was not in for service but I asked was it in for anything else, possibly an inspection or a recall, or, anything? There is no way it went up like that without human intervention quite honestly or gauges were off along the line somewhere.

Well then based "only" on the info you gave, the possibilities I see is either different gauges have been used over this time or someone did a drive-by to fill your tires.

Costco did the inspection on tires.

Either I did it or someone else.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't Tom Brady or Bill Belichick who over-inflated your tires .....now if they were under-inflated by a couple of pounds after a recent drive through the Boston area we may be onto something :)

Gosh I hope this is not an emerging trend with the punk kids! Randomly pumping up Prius tires.

And to think back in the day the prank was to deflate tires.

Boy how the times have changed!

Was the outside temperature significantly higher this time than when you previously topped off the tires? Was that -10F reading from this time, or from the previous time?

Were the tires highway-warmed this time, vs. morning cold last time?

    Wait......what ??
I thought you first said that YOU found them over-inflated.
Did Costco find the over-inflated condition and report it to you........or did you find it that way AFTER they did their "inspection" ??

It is always possible that the report from the shop (any shop) might not be 100% true.

Maybe the gauge malfunctioned because of that temperature? (If it's a digital one ... )

I keep two gauges in my car, a digital and a good old style one (the face looks like a speedometer, not the one that pops out the bottom). I use both to check the tires as I fill them and they both seem to be spot on.

Btw, how often is everyone checking thier tire pressures here?

    I'm sure you do. ;)

It's quite obvious that either people are hauling air flasks around the streets of Chicago in the dark of night and randomly putting about 10-psi into unsuspecting people's tires while they sleep, or your spouse just took out a very large life insurance policy on you.
You'd better check the brake lines too.

    Me?
I tend to discount the "Air Flask" theory. It's been too cold up there for that kind of foolishness.
The PNOK (Primary Next Of Kin) theory is also kinda out there, so I'm going to guess that it's an instrumentation or a maintenance error.

Set the tires to whatever you actually want them to be and monitor them a little more frequently just in case I'm wrong about the air flask or the PNOK theories.

    Good Luck!
(You may need it! )

costco inflated the tyres with nitrogen at -10 degrees and at 30 degrees nitro will increase to 55.
