If you're looking for cheesy next time you are at Toyota dealership pop up trunk and take a look at Prius C spare.

IMHO Sonata mid-cycle refresh uglied up it considerably. I rented Sonata in 2012 and found it more refined fan my Gen3. A lot of car for buck, for sure. Will I get one? unlikely; still have nightmares of Excel /shrug/ But there're alot of Hyundai products in parking lots, and they offer best base warranty so people are buying them

I just bought a 2015 Civic. Gets 40 mpg highway. But I sure like the way my Prius C handles over the Civic.

At least the Prius C has real carpet. Not sure what they used in the 2015 Civic. Looks like cardboard. I think all company's are cutting corners to save on weight.

everything else in this report is wrong, why would you believe the patents ran out in 2013?

exactly. trying to steal hybrid sales from toyota is a fools errand. perhaps for marketing purposes.

Read an article last week stating that car buying is largely an emotional decision. Also, it seems that 25 or 30 MPG combined is considered 'good fuel economy' by so many people because that is what they buy, in droves.

I don't think the average car buyer is going to take a hybrid over a conventional until that hybrid looks as good, drives as good, has almost no sacrifice in cargo space and cost only a little bit more than the conventional (maybe $1k or so). The Prius in its current or close to it shape will never sway very many people away from buying the Accords, Camrys, Altimas, Fusion, etc....
I think the 4th gen Prius will continue to sell about like the 3rd gen. The 4th gen Prius will be better for sure, but conventionals are getting better overall too.

I'll have a look at that. I've no idea how carpet can look cardboard, really.

    • NORML mode - what we have today, 0-60 in <10 seconds

Seems your bar is pretty low. I just read Consumer Reports reviews on Prius c, Fact is Prius c uses the YARIS platform, has a grand total of a paltry 99 HP, revs high on the freeway, hard plastics all over inside, center mounted gages (ewww), lots or road / wind noise. Dude says just buy a used liftback, it's a much better car which in itself leaves quite a bit to be desired, as a car. But, oh yea, it gets lots of MPGs.

Sorry, not following. What goes 0 to 60 in 7 seconds? Even Camry hybrid can't do that.

The tonneu in C's trunk is pressed cardboard, floor is styrofoam and gate panel a stappled piece of synthetic felt (the same you may have furniture wrapped on delivery). Interior plastics look like they were lifted of cheesy Chinese toy, esp in all grey. C makes Gen3 look classy/expensive.

Here in Europe the real challenge is capturing diesel drivers.
Some, if proven to have made mods that allow their cars to spew smoke, should be trialed after capture. I daily see them driving those soot blowers.

The covering over the spare in a sedan trunk has been some akin to cardboard for awhile now. It's that in our 2001 Sable. It is just a question of how well it is gussied up.

Hatchbacks seem to get something a little more substantial. With many having an underfloor area, the floor doesn't have the spare to help support it as in a sedan, so it is more rigid(the Sonic may use a little carbon fiber there). Then that underfloor area may use a plastic tray. One part that covers the spare and the fasteners for the rear seat is likely cheaper to build than multiple panels for the space.

CR was way too harsh on C. If you assume that hatchback and C the same price, then yeah there is no question, but if it is 3-5K cheaper then it has it's place. Comparing to Gen3 acceleration is ~10% slower, but handling is better and ergonomics are better too. Seats slightly worse, and 2nd row and cargo loose big. BUT if you don't have family/cargo to haul it and just need a commuter, C is fine

maybe civic is using the trunk liner in the cabin. i have been hearing a lot of civic complaints in the last 5-10 years.

FYI, granted the rear is obscured but the height of the top suggests it won't have very good highway mileage. The taper of the Prius hatchback is about as abrupt as one can get . . . without going a little nuts . . . to get a low coefficient of drag. So I don't see this as being a real highway competitor.
