    Morning folks,

I've pulled the HV battery from the car and would like to see if anyone knows what more I need to remove before I take it to the parts department to exchange it for a new one.

I had thought the temperature sensor on top, but don't know how to further disassemble from here.

    Thanks!

I think you are good. Bring tools with you when you take the old battery in for exchange and open up the new battery to compare and ensure all is good, before you leave the parts counter. As you know, the new battery consists of the sheet steel enclosure and the modules. If the temperature sensors are not easily removable then the new battery probably will include those items - because the dealer techs are not going to mess with removing the modules for access to the sensors.

It will probably be required that you remove the battery ECU as this is not part of the new battery.

A couple of reports have surfaced of Toyota dealers not selling the pack to private individuals.
I suggest clarifying this before you drive over. You may have to be the pick up person for someone they agree to work with.

Remove the rubber vent tubes on tube. You will re-use those on the new pack.

The computer and the relays should have stayed in the case and the whole drivers side case with computer and relays comes off. It is held on by 3 , 10mm nuts. The orange and black cables that run along the side of the pack are disconnected. 8 mm nuts.

Here is a picture of what you will get from Toyota, 28 modules, bus bars, compression plates and rods, chassis and cover. 00V0V_gTyzGIYQisl_600x450.jpg

Maybe just take delivery of the new battery first, pay core charge as required. Once you've installed it you will know precisely what needs to go back.

Thanks for all of the replies everyone!

If the temperature sensor is not included, how do I remove it?

I had orange cables on both sides.
This is where I am at now.

I was able to easily remove the cables from the side that connects to the safety plug.

Do I need to remove anything from the other side of the battery?

    Any further tips or tricks?

Finally was able to get the clips off the other side so I could pull the hose orange cables off.

Now its off to the dealership.

Take a good look at what you're getting, make sure you're not giving them parts you won't be getting back with the new one. Maybe they can help?

Thanks to everyone here I was able to strip it down. It was pretty much naked when I turned it in. The Toyota guys were great about unpacking the new one for me and loading it as well.

Now I just have to do it all in reverse. ;)

If you don't mind: battery price, any tax, which dealership (in AZ)?

Were you a retail customer? Internet Customer? Licensed mechanic? Some people report of dealerships refusing to sell to a lay person (only sell to a licensed mechanic or an automotive repair shop).

Replace or not? Follow this link if you are technically proficient. A friend sent this to me and I thought it was extremely informative and may save you a lot of money if you need to replace the HV battery. URL: imgur:com|gallery|j8Bcp|. replace the "|" with a forward slash.

Yikes, it has been a while since I pulled the battery out.
Thanks to two painful back episodes I was unable to work on it at all until yesterday.

I've been taking pictures, making notes and will update the thread accordingly when I've completed it all.

The battery was almost $2200 out the door without tax. I've a friend that is a mechanic elsewhere that arranged it for me. He asked that I not mention the dealership by name.

The replacement battery, whilst shiny and new, has three less mounting holes than the previous battery case. Nothing that seems important is missing, just rearranged a little.

I've put it all back into the car, reconnected everything and just have to go purchase a new 12v battery tonight and install it.

Then hope like heck the red triangle is gone. ;)

It's totally okay that these parts are left over, right?

    Kidding
    Sort of...

The new battery was slightly different in terms of the mounting cover and it also came with some new nuts and bolts to work with as well.
