I recently changed to Liberty Mutual for car insurance. I installed a Right Track monitor on my Prius to save 5% or more on insurance. So far in 85 miles I have logged 10 rapid acceleration events and 10 Hard Breaking events. Rapid acceleration on a Prius, I'm so proud. Mostly from 2.5 to 10 Mph in 1 second. I didn't know how fast a Prius was. So far my savings is shown as 12% so I'm not too fast. Any one else with jackrabbit starts on their Prius?

I'm not really proud of it, but I got 2 speeding tickets in less than 12 months.

To be honest though, both were more, "Speed Trap" revenue, than actual "Speed Demon" caught.

I don't care how much I might save on my car insurance, I don't like the idea of anyone tracking my driving "events" that closely.

I have a friend who used one of those devices because he knew he'd score big as he drives like a complete Grandma. He ended up saving a crap-ton off of his insurance.

Me on the other hand - I would fare poorly with one, lol. I am a self-admitted, havent hit rock-bottom yet enough to reform, die hard LEAD FOOT.

"All the power an adult could need, just not all the power a boy could want" may also be more power than an insurance company will discount.

How long do you have to drive with the device attached before they make a decision on your discount?

My insurance company doesn't offer the device but am just wondering.

If it's only for a month or something like that, just hypermile like crazy for the month and reap the disc. :)

It's a 90 day monitor. I have the habit of "briskly accelerating to the speed limit, then locking on it. I usually pull away from most other drivers when stop lights say go. Hard to change a habit for 3 months.

I'm a pretty traditional granny driver (according to my granny) but I still got some rapid braking events logged (darn surprise traffic lights). I drive so seldom, though, that I'm pretty sure the logging device did in my aux battery. Saved a good chunk on insurance though (29% I believe it was).

Since I discovered that I could get around briskly in my Prius and still save a bucket load of cash by utilising hypermiling techniques while more than keeping up with the traffic, I no longer baby the vehicle like I used to when I first bought it in June 2013.

I'm away from the lights quite briskly - fast enough to usually leave everything else behind, and get comfortably into a favourable lane. This is done without actually driving like a jerk. I love my Prius too much to throw it about like some demented "boy racer". Once I get to the road speed limit (even if it's 30mph), I'll normally switch to feathering the throttle to maintain the speed limit - or keep up with the flow of traffic - as the case may be.

The Prius II is surprisingly amazing for overtaking in urban traffic environments. It does possess the element of surprise in being able to "jump to warp" in the blink of an eye - compliments of the 67hp electric propulsion motor and its maximum torque from zero mph capability.
However, I do regularly get up to speed quickly, then feather the throttle at the speed limit I've decided to hold at - this actually gives me very good mpg indeed.

I also utilise the pulse and glide technique - tending to treat the Prius as if it is a spaceship - by applying bursts of thrust in conjunction with reading the positive or negative incline of the road ahead (these inclines substituting the effects of gravitational bodies in space).
it's truly amazing how after a while, you become one with the vehicle, and become another extra primary ECU / subprocessor aiding and abetting this astounding 4 wheeled hybrid craft in travelling along swiftly, while saving loadsa-money on fuel. :D

Yes, where it counts, I do tend to dash away from the lights right up to the posted speed limit. The Prius is no slouch. If you see a Prius being driven slowly, that's strictly because the driver wants to amble along quietly, smoothly, enjoying the excellent Hybrid Synergy Drive. Not because Prii are slow! I did just that on the way home today, keeping to the slow lane of a three lane highway during my commute home, and almost "floating" along quietly (below the speed limit). I only went much faster coming off hills where I knew I could exploit the momentum for about 2.5 miles at a time - that's when I switched to the fast lane. I exploit hills the same way a spacecraft might exploit the gravitational well of a planet during a flyby ;)
