How about this nifty quote from InsideEVs.com Monthly Plug_in Scorecard for February_2015 by Jay Cole!
The shortage of PiP's has apparently left hearts pining.

Why is the PiP supply is so short? ....it's purely conjecture as Toyota has not said why.
My thinking is it relates to CA Green HOV Stickers running out.
But I am sure we could make up other reasons, any ideas?
Note that GM seems to have similar strategy with the Volt, which is said to be due to holding off for next model run.

Didn't CA green stickers get extended beyond original deadline for another year?

With Gen4 situation it doesn't make sense to expand Gen3 production

The CA green HOV sticker theory of PiP shortage would say, first of all, many PiPs were sold in CA for green HOV stickers. Yes the CA legislature increased the green HOV stickers after they ran out at 40,000. Either Toyota (and GM) production plans were set before that. or I have a conspiracy theory that CA wanted to extend the green HOV stickers to allow new plug-ins on the market (FORDS, BMW, HONDAs) to get a piece of the HOV pie, and so Toyota and GM were asked to back off of taking all the HOV stickers. Or Toyota simply felt the market was weaker with the competition.

That's a loong lead time between the last of the G3s and the first of the G4s.

Not sure this would be the case. Toyota said in the past that Gen4 will have PiP as an option - not special model. If they didn't back off on this promise, PiP will be an option to buy with any/most Gen4 packages.

    That's what I was thinking.
The G4 'pip' will be an up-optioned hatch, or just a bolt-on option for trim levels 4 and 5.

It would have to be a factory/not dealer installed option as it would require LiION batteries, the plug and charger installation. I cannot imagine them putting an extra fueling door on every Prii just b/c someone may want to opt for PiP.

pretty sure toyota said be would be coming quite a bit after the delayed genIV. no one knows what it will be like though, pure guessing. as for the shortage, they probably don't want to have them sitting on the lot's again and having to give $5,000. discounts, especially with $2. gas.

...right and coupled with the fact that CA did indeed extend green HOV stickers, so that pretty much sucks up the limited supply, which otherwise might have been enough to cover the demand.

Supposed to be - emphasis. A few months ago I really had serious doubts. Now that many grasp the over priced folly of hydrogen cars & infrastructure - I'm hopeful Toyota will get to business.

Heard on the TV news today that gasoline prices have gone up $1/gal in the last month. This is attributed to a labor strike at one refinery which has shut it down, and a refinery damaged in an explosion in southern California. The state of California requires a unique blend of gasoline that is only produced in California, so every time there is the least hiccup in production, the price jumps.

I'm sure you will be happy to hear that the change has been MUCH less in other areas.
In the SE, the price is up maybe 20-30 cents above the recent lows.

unfortunately, so much about alternatives rests in the hands of cali consumers. real progress will be reflected in sales in the other 49.

When I made my famous prediction here (you guys remember right?) of $2 gasoline, I said it would happen by Feb_2015, because I knew the price always spikes in Feb. I think gaso price probably heads way down after we get over this seasonal hump, maybe as we get towards Sept.

...problem is CA. Assuming CA finally stops extending green HOV stickers for PHEV after around June/July 2015, the road ahead for sales will probably be harder for PiP and to a lesser extent Volt.

I heard a report that oil storage tanks will be filled to capacity as early as April, after which continued production could force crude prices dow to around $20 a barrel. Lot's of variables but I think $2-3 a gallon will be here for 1-2 more years. California exempted since my fill up last week was around $3.50 a gallon.
